Verdict: We derived the Story card’s irreducible first principles and the complete space they generate — 30 character situations × 42 memory levers → 34 card archetypes — and placed the five showcase card-types as instances inside that catalog. The pivot entry set the direction this morning (Modified Method of Loci layered on the Form’s concepts, the Story slot spent on residue only); this session built the operational substrate under it.
What we derived
The foundation reduces to a small set of principles, with the master constraint at the top: near-zero redundancy with the Form. The Form owns the concepts, etymology, and assembly; the Story’s one slot encodes only the arbitrary residue the Form leaves — binding the components into one drawable gestalt, and pinning the after-pattern part of the sound the Form’s series fails to predict. From there: every recallable piece gets a concrete encoding channel (visual or auditory); the elements bind into one interdependent micro-event; one deliberately non-mundane beat rides the most arbitrary element; a visual scene resolves to one drawable still; the sound residue is after-pattern only; each card tests one gradeable target and withholds it. Effort is triaged, and a residue-free character earns story-null.
The Form/Story residue architecture is product design, not sourced doctrine. The anti-collision discipline (no shared palace, two characters never colliding in recall) is a design extrapolation from the loci instruction to give each piece a distinct element. Story-null is product editorial policy resting on the sourced salience-triage principle. The catalog labels each of these in place.
Axis A (the job) is the 30 character situations — pictograph, indicative, 會意, the phono-semantic family across exact-match to heavily-drifted, 假借, polyphone, worn and empty components, dual-role, positional allograph, repeated component, function-word, story-null, simplified divergence, folk-parse, leech. Axis B (the toolkit) is the 42 levers — decompose, bind, interdependence, absurdity, dual-coding, the auditory channel, glass rendering, the persona guards, contrastive encoding, generative withholding, and the rest. Their product is the 34-archetype catalog; the five showcases (bare-glyph fix, attribute encoding, non-redundancy re-angle, meaning-meaning interdependence, depictable-sound + salience) are five of its cells.
Method
We ran an 8-agent workflow over the ICS loci/rote corpus and the Outlier note → a synthesis → a completeness critic and a fidelity critic in parallel → a reconcile pass. The ICS course material stays private; the technique is synthesized and cited through the public Rules of Effective Memorization note.
The fidelity critic stripped the fabricated material that made the synthesis read as better-sourced than it was: the “memorise only the outer layer / last resort” and “layer 3/4 on cards” lines (absent from every source file), the “runs out of space / why-is-my-doorknob-a-train” rationale behind the no-palace rule, the von Restorff attribution, the “wooden-train-vs-train-with-a-forest” example, “image occlusion” as a sourced prompt type, and the unsourced 2-4 chunking rule. It corrected source tags — multi-directional reconstruction, generative construction, and one-recall-target-per-card are ICS-CONDENSED items, never loci. The completeness critic added the glass treatment for empty components, the auditory channel (which softened the depictability gate down to visual cards only), the three persona guards (component-sense over character-sense, same-shape ≠ same-identity, cross-sibling survival), and three situation classes the synthesis missed — repeated identical components, function-word characters, and positional allographs.
What the catalog is for
The 34 archetypes are an operational selection table: a future authoring AI matches a character’s situation to an archetype, applies its dominant levers, and writes the scene. The list is meant to be extended as new situations surface. Eight next showcases are queued, led by the sound-silent bind (然, zero sound beats — the cleanest proof of non-redundancy on the sound axis), the glass empty-component (射), the dual-role piece (堅), and the story-null verdict (百).
