Writing voice — agent prose reverts to selling; the standing fix is to read the standard before drafting

Verdict: Before drafting any prose for the vault or any project — posts, briefs, blurbs, titles, chrome, journal entries, chat summaries kept for reference — the agent opens 02 - System/Writing Standards.md and works from the file, never from a remembered paraphrase of it. The one test, lifted from the standard’s own No Posing rule: the attitude is the disease; the topic is irrelevant. Read each line and ask what it wants from the reader. The only passing answer is nothing.

What happened

A Chinese-learning blog-draft pass on 2026-06-30 reverted to the model’s default register in full. The titles performed (“The Bottleneck Nobody Names,” “You Can’t Think Your Way Through a Sentence”). The blurbs ran the misdiagnosis reveal the standard forbids (“registers as an output problem to drill away; the actual gap is the missing mental model,” “the reflex diagnosis is wrong”), carried on em-dash punchlines and balanced pairs. On inspection the cause was a paraphrase of the voice held in agent memory standing in for the file.

Why the voice reverts

The standard and the model pull opposite directions, and the model’s training wins by default. Vault prose informs a peer; the model’s default performs for an audience. Every move the standard strikes is writing acting on the reader in place of transferring a fact the reader can check:

  • Superlatives and adjectives stand in for a measurement not taken (“rare among skills,” “nobody names”).
  • The reveal plants the wrong instinct, then corrects it. It flatters with insight and casts the reader as mistaken. The standard’s framing is “what it feels like” and “what is happening underneath,” reader as peer.
  • Em dashes, triads, and balanced pairs sell by rhythm. A line shaped to sound finished has traded shape for substance.
  • A blurb that hands over its own conclusion assumes the reader could not reach it.

Why the standard wins, and where it would flip

The model voice reads faster and reaches wider, and a draft in it lands sooner. It loses here for two reasons. The vault optimizes the reader using and trusting a page months later, not the moment of first reading. And the standard was assembled by striking lines one at a time, many of them LLM hype lines, so the model’s defaults are the thing it was built to kill. No wiki or front-facing surface in this system is exempt; even the surfaces whose job looks like conversion ban selling outright. The flip condition is therefore narrow to absent, which is why the voice has to be stopped at the draft rather than caught in review.

The fix costs a file read before each prose task. Skipping it costs a posing line reaching the vault, decaying trust, and getting struck later at higher cost than preventing it. The asymmetry favors the read.

The fix, recorded

Agent memory now carries read-writing-standards-before-prose as a standing rule: identify the genre (decision, wiki, condensed, front-facing), draft, then sweep every line against the Delete List and the one test before anything is shown. The standard is the authority; memory only points to it.
