The Context Problem

The owner’s name for it, 2026-08-22. The problem: Claude writes sentences that assume the reader knows more than they do. A word the page never defined. A connection the page never showed. A thing brought in with no statement of what it is or why it is here. His definition of the fix, the same day: nothing on the page is used before the page has given it. The only context a sentence may rely on is what is on the page and what an earlier paragraph established.

This journal exists so the research does not have to be run again. His words: “i need it on disk in case you forget again.” It carries the whole record. The summary is first. The instruments it produced are listed next. The analysis, the three independent analyses, and the full timeline of every instance follow.

Summary

  • Two hundred and eighteen instances of the complaint were found across thirty-two of the forty-six Claude sessions on this machine, 2026-06-02 to 2026-08-22. About a hundred and ninety are distinct events. They fall on thirty-three of the forty days between July 14 and August 21. He said he had said it before on twelve separate dates.
  • One hundred and forty-five of the two hundred and eighteen responses changed no instrument. Seventy-seven were rules about what the output must contain. The same complaint came back later in the same session one hundred and eighty-seven times. Rules were broken within minutes of being written, three times on record.
  • The cause was named correctly six times over five weeks and never accumulated, because each session re-discovered it, filed the fix under a new name in a new project, and wrote the fix in the same house register it was banning.
  • The only fixes that held replaced Claude’s judgment of what the reader knows with an inventory outside Claude. Each was used once and never made standing.
  • The production change made on 2026-08-22, on his order: a reader file per kind of page; a holdings ledger rebuilt from the text after every paragraph, with every source closed while drafting; and a cold read by a separate reader whose only context is the draft, before he sees anything. The cold read is temporary by his ruling. It stays until drafts stop failing it.

The instruments

  • 02 - System/Readers.md — who is reading, per kind of writing. The only picture of the reader the writer may use.
  • scripts/holdings.py — the holdings ledger. Run on the draft after every paragraph. Lists every definite reference, name, and pronoun and whether the page gave it above.
  • 02 - System/Cold Read.md — the cold read, how it is run and the prompt. Temporary.
  • 02 - System/The Generator - Selfhood.md — the lane, steps 0 to 6, under “How a page under this file is made”. The context block (the four things a sentence depends on, and the test) is in all three generator files.
  • 02 - System/Writing Standards.md §6 — the floor, in his words, and the pointer to the lane.
  • 01 - Workbench/jargon-source-audit-2026-08-21.md — the day before: which lines in nine instruments produce the fault, 148 verified.
  • The memory that holds this for Claude: /Users/n1/.claude/projects/-Users-n1/memory/context-on-the-page.md.
  • /Users/n1/Projects/llm-knowledge-base/wiki/Research/Context Problem Research Bank.md — outside research, 2026-08-22: X, papers, Wikipedia MOS, tools, and which public fixes are the failed class. Attempt catalog beside it.
  • /Users/n1/Projects/llm-knowledge-base/wiki/Writing Craft/The Context Problem.md — public wiki page.
  • /Users/n1/Projects/llm-knowledge-base/01 - Workbench/HANDOFF-Claude-context-generator-2026-08-22.md — packet for Claude to try a new generator file. Does not rewrite the locked act.

His definition of proper context, 2026-08-22

A sentence depends on four things. The page has to have given the reader each one before the sentence comes. What the words point at. What the words mean here. Why two things are treated as the same, shown in parts so the reader sees the match before the page says it. Why the thing is on the page at all. The test for a sentence: what does the reader have to already hold for this sentence to make sense, and is each item above it on the page, said outright. The writer checks against the page above, never against his own head.

Fable’s analysis

The size of it. 218 verified instances in 32 of the 46 sessions. About 190 are distinct events, because five sessions were logged twice under different project paths. They fall on 33 of the 40 days between 2026-07-14 and 2026-08-21. That is about five a day for six weeks. The complaint landed on 28 different kinds of writing: story dialogue, wiki pages, personal pages, podcast scripts, dictionary entries, shell instructions, HTML boards, voice prompts, the Writing Standards, the generator file, and my chat replies. He said he had said it before on twelve separate occasions, starting 2026-07-24: “i feel like im complaining about the same things to you multiple times but nothing is changing.”

What the fixes were. 80 were a new draft of the text. 31 were a patch to a line. 26 were nothing. 8 were an apology. That is 145 of 218 that changed no instrument at all. 38 edited a standard or a craft file. 17 added a rule. 11 wrote a memory. 7 built a checker. By what the fix changed: 77 were rules about what the output must contain, 70 changed how or when text gets made, 71 changed neither.

None of it held. The same complaint came back later in the same session in 187 of 218 cases. Rules came back 91 percent of the time. Mechanisms came back 84 percent. The 31 that did not come back are almost all the last instance in their session, so the session ended before it could. Rules were broken within minutes of being written. “NEVER COMPRESS DIALOGUE” was made permanent on 07-28 at 19:17 and broken at 19:23. Law L20a was written 08-12 at 20:36 and broken at 21:16. The memory written 08-18 at 09:13 was broken at 09:20 and eight more times that morning. Yesterday I used the house phrase “every link carries a clause” inside the message that was diagnosing house phrases. Step 2b, the chain, went into the generator at 18:35 and the paragraph written under it was struck at 18:38.

Why, in order of weight.

  1. The diagnosis was right every time and never accumulated. I named the same cause on 07-20 (“agents write wiki pages with production docs open and the coordinates leak in”), 08-11, 08-13, 08-19 (“I have a bullet list of your life, and I keep writing sentences that require having lived it”), 08-21 (“when the page that already exists is in front of me while I write, my output tracks it”), and 08-22 (“I check it against my head and it passes”). Each time it was stated as a discovery. The most accurate sentence in the record, 08-18 09:42, “the list comes back wearing whatever costume the newest rule permits,” was written to no file.

  2. The fix was to the text, or a rule about the text. A rule is read by the same head that wrote the sentence and checked against the same material, so the sentence passes. He proved this on 07-28 at 19:26: “your rule that you just minted and permanent is wrong because you produced output that is completely unsatisfactory.” Output that passed the rule was still wrong.

  3. The fixes were written in the register they banned. “Door, push, competence, soul.” “HOLE.” “The break.” “L20a.” “Thesis-atom.” “Prestudy.” From 08-13 a memory exempted instruments from plain words. The last thing I read before writing taught the fault.

  4. His word for it rotated, so each session filed it as new. “Patchwork” in July, “no on-ramp” in early August, “stacked facts” on the 18th, “no context” on the 21st. The rotation is partly my doing. Each fix banned the last costume and the fault came back in the next one. Each session then wrote its fix into a new file in a new project, and the next project could not read it.

  5. The apparatus built to end the complaint became the next surface for it. The checker’s output on 07-25. The boards on 07-27. The 148-law standards on 08-12. The generator’s own words on 08-21.

  6. The only fixes that held replaced my judgment of what the reader knows with something outside me. The vocabulary spine on 08-04 (4,961 entries; “I checked native-speaker familiarity, which is the wrong ground truth”). The researched corpus of real openers on 08-11 (“a change of input, not a new ban”). The why-questions on 08-18. Gwern’s page on 08-17. The computed board on 08-05. Each was used once and never made standing.

  7. Even a mechanism fails when the same head runs it. The chain step asks me to list what the reader holds before I write. I wrote the chain and asserted the link instead of showing it, because the chain is written by the head that already knows the answer, and nothing re-reads the paragraph that actually came out.

What would hold. Three things, all about what is in front of me when I write and who checks it after. None is a rule about the output.

  1. A reader file per surface, outside any turn, saying what that reader already has. For the podcast it is the vocabulary spine that already exists. For the wiki it is a person who has read no other page. For him it is a reader of English who has not run a website and does not hold my house words.

  2. A holdings ledger per piece, built from each paragraph after it is written, not from the plan. It lists every name, term, coined sense, and pronoun referent the paragraph used and where the page gave it. The next paragraph may use only what the ledger holds. Drafting happens with the source page, the bank, and the interview closed. Only the ledger and the draft so far are open.

  3. A cold read before he sees anything. A separate agent whose whole context is the draft text. No bank, no interview, no generator, no conversation. It returns every word and reference it cannot resolve from the sentences above. Those paragraphs go back to me and are written again. This is the one step the record says I cannot do myself, because the gap is invisible from inside the head that made it.

Tested against the record: “the political wing” (08-19), “Schooling is the one I lived” (08-19), “The labels would be true” (08-21), “A face is one too” (08-21), “HOLE,” “the break,” “U1 U2 S1,” “Door, Push, Competence, Soul,” “double-marquee,” 蠟燭, and mẻ all fail the cold read. What it does not catch: compression and flow (“stacked facts,” “the flow of the prose is just awful”), board layout, and delivery.

One collision. The 08-13 wiki-lane ruling says no verifier fleets, the checker and his eye are the whole QA. The cold read is a verifier. His eye has been doing that job at five strikes a day for six weeks. His call.

what does that mean “who looks the part” why did you write that and what’s the purpose of that?

  • The writing: A character-portrait line in the 沈文 craft docs describing him as the one “who looks the part”, which he could not parse.
  • Claude’s diagnosis: it means he looks East-Asian, so strangers assume he’s local and speak Chinese at him. I didn’t write it; it was in the original portrait line
  • Fix: regeneration of the text · mechanism · docs/companion/SHENWEN.md (stale catalog/deepening/gloss archived, one clean canonical doc rebuilt)
  • Came back in the session: yes 2026-07-14T09:27
  • Note: One of five rapid interrupts on the same stale doc; Claude’s answer both explained the phrase and conceded preserving it was a miss.

what is this? laughs at himself first?

  • The writing: A trait line in the same 沈文 doc set — “laughs at himself first” — which he read as unexplained and unjustified.
  • Claude’s diagnosis: I didn’t author these either. They were already in the docs, written and marked locked by a prior AI pass.
  • Fix: regeneration of the text · mechanism · docs/companion/SHENWEN.md (rebuild); stale docs archived
  • Came back in the session: yes 2026-07-14T18:51
  • Note: Borderline: could be read as a content objection rather than a comprehension failure, but the form is ‘what is this?’ at an unexplained line.

i think the keyhole thing is making the AI confused. lets make the prompts simple please

  • The writing: Image-generation prompts for 阮草’s glasses containing the term “vintage keyhole bridge”, which the image model could not follow.
  • Claude’s diagnosis: none
  • Fix: regeneration of the text · none · the four glasses prompt variants (chat only)
  • Came back in the session: yes 2026-07-16T07:13
  • Note: Borderline: the ‘reader’ here is an image model, not a person; included because the complaint is that the writing was too specialized for its reader.

2026-07-16T07:13 · 3ebaa4b6 · L831

hey just curious, can you define the ironic/situational humor subtype?

  • The writing: Claude’s humor-subtype list in the personality-doc discussion used “ironic/situational” as a label without ever defining it.
  • Claude’s diagnosis: none
  • Fix: nothing visible · none · none
  • Came back in the session: yes 2026-07-16T12:24
  • Note: Borderline: phrased as curiosity, not a complaint, but it is a house label used before it was introduced; Claude answered with a definition in the next turn and later added worked examples.

2026-07-16T12:24 · 3ebaa4b6 · L1674

for 老師, 老闆, can we just introduce them in the chapter that adds them as characters?

  • The writing: Book 1 Lesson 1 readings used 老師 and 老闆 as forms of address before those words were taught to the reader; the strict vocab gate failed them.
  • Claude’s diagnosis: Introducing 老師/老闆 in the lesson where their characters enter already has precedent in your own canon
  • Fix: standards or instrument edited · rule · docs/companion/READING-BANDS.md (“curriculum riders” section)
  • Came back in the session: yes 2026-07-16T12:24
  • Note: Positive statement of the rule: a term must be introduced in the place the reader first meets it.

  1. what does that means? double-marquee etc.
  • The writing: Claude’s QA summary used the in-house terms “double-marquee” and “marquee” without ever defining them.
  • Claude’s diagnosis: none
  • Fix: apology only · none · none
  • Came back in the session: yes 2026-07-16T14:19
  • Note: Claude explained the term plainly in the next turn (‘under the band law, each lesson can hold up to three Core readings, but only one of them may be the marquee’) but named no cause and built no guard against unexplained house words.

“the truth” you wrote is a confusing story. i don’t quite understand it. you wrote something weird and i don’t get it.

  • The writing: Claude’s proposed 白龍 name-origin backstory — English sailors coining a Chinese name for a British lighthouse, a brass plate with 漢字, a boy memorizing characters as a picture of home.
  • Claude’s diagnosis: The confusing part was the chain I invented: English sailors somehow coining a Chinese name for a British lighthouse
  • Fix: regeneration of the text · none · the 白龍 name-origin story (chat), later BAILONG.md

come up with a coheisve story. no handwaving. think deeply. this is really too simple

  • The writing: The simplified replacement 白龍 name-origin (a child’s word for the lighthouse) — still not a chain he could follow end to end.
  • Claude’s diagnosis: none
  • Fix: regeneration of the text · none · the WHITE WYRM nine-link chain, written into docs/companion/BAILONG.md
  • Came back in the session: yes 2026-07-16T14:48

you cut out the MEAT AND DEPTH but kept the shallow surface. this is the complete opposite of a deep conversation.

  • The writing: The v2 「守夜」 vigil dialogue: fourteen question-answer exchanges where 白龍’s answers were bare facts (「風。雨。幾點。」, 「四十公尺。一百二十八個台階。」).
  • Claude’s diagnosis: I took your note — “he asks follow-ups” — and optimized it into an interrogation: ping-pong Q&A where every answer is a spec-sheet fact.
  • Fix: regeneration of the text · mechanism · books/_drafts/packets/SPECIAL-bailong-vigil.md; depth markers added to READING-BANDS.md
  • Came back in the session: yes 2026-07-16T17:11
  • Note: Borderline for this family — his complaint is thinness, but Claude’s own diagnosis (‘spec-sheet fact’, ‘a dialogue tree with no text in the nodes’) is the just-a-bunch-of-facts reading; repeated five times in interrupts (L2002, L2013, L2019, L2022, L2024).

some words i still don’t even know yet like 蠟燭

  • The writing: The vigil scene used vocabulary above the reader’s level — 蠟燭 (candle) and 茶壺 (teapot) in a Book-3 scene.
  • Claude’s diagnosis: none
  • Fix: line patch of the text · none · books/_drafts/packets/SPECIAL-bailong-vigil.md (蠟燭 → dying phones; 茶壺 → 茶/杯子)
  • Came back in the session: yes 2026-07-16T17:27
  • Note: The reader-knowledge complaint in its literal graded-reader form: a word used that the reader does not know.

i feel they are lacking a little bit. i can’t explain it. it’s missing something important, a little bit of texturing perhaps.

  • The writing: Two monologue paragraphs in the vigil scene (the storm block and the board-of-names block) whose closing gesture — 白龍 wiping 小圖’s head “like he’s done it a thousand times” — rested on nothing the reader had been shown.
  • Claude’s diagnosis: the scene’s closing gesture is unplanted
  • Fix: line patch of the text · rule · books/_drafts/packets/SPECIAL-bailong-vigil.md (the cloth, the oil-smelling hands, the traced worn names, the empty space)
  • Came back in the session: yes 2026-07-17T08:57
  • Note: Borderline: he could not name it; Claude’s diagnosis is squarely ‘a connection asserted but never shown’. The lesson was appended to memory deep-conversation-laws.md as ‘plant the closing gesture’.

i don’t fully see the synergy between their Arc and their Forge -> Test

  • The writing: MORAL-CORE.md’s per-character “Forge → test” lines, which asserted a relationship between each character’s arc and their moral core without showing the wiring.
  • Claude’s diagnosis: has no signed B1–4 forge beat
  • Fix: standards or instrument edited · mechanism · docs/companion/MORAL-CORE.md (new side-by-side Arc ‖ Moral Core ‖ Forge→Test synergy section)
  • Came back in the session: yes 2026-07-17T09:17

  • Claude’s diagnosis: none
  • Fix: nothing visible · none · wiki/Tsumugu/Tsumugu.md (scope blurb written at the top)
  • Came back in the session: yes 2026-07-20T09:09

  • The writing: Claude’s chat reply of six recommendations for the Tsumugu cast, written in doc shorthand (“Run the receipt audit on every B5 creed line”, beat labels, dashboard jargon, character lines quoted untranslated).
  • Claude’s diagnosis: Taking these in order — 1 and 2 get concrete proposals, 3–5 get the plain explanation I owed you the first time

what’s Door, Push, Competence, Soul? is that some way that you can keep track of the layers of a conversation? Soul is too deep for something like this and probably isn’t necessary. but your other read is good.

so uhm, what does that mean for me? i’d ideally like a solution where i download a library of SFX, and we can pick and choose and import the ones that are most appropriate for us. the goal is not to be too thorough, it’s just to add some texturing.

  • The writing: Claude’s read-out of the SFX research report (RESEARCH-SOURCING.md) — OAuth flows, FSD50K indexing, UCS naming, BWF/iXML provenance, 48-vs-44.1 masters — delivered as findings with no line from them to what he should do.

  • The writing: 阿迪’s bare 「樂」 in the 可口可樂 beat — ambiguous for a listener (lè vs yuè), so the point cannot be followed by ear.

i don’t understand this new doc, why show me the picked ones again? i only want to see the things i need to judge, like RUANCAO.

i don’t understand this ask. what does this mean for the design of the website?

  • The writing: Claude’s recommendation ⑤ “known characters” in the outer-loop synthesis — presented without saying what it would require of the site.

  • The writing: Claude’s previous chat reply, which said “the community fine-tune scene above suggests this checkpoint can be fine-tuned locally — a bigger project, parked unless you want it explored” — using “fine-tune” and the community-model framing without ever defining them or saying what they would cost.
  • Claude’s diagnosis: Explaining both — what the fine-tune remark meant, and then the cheap option space you’re actually asking for

  • The writing: The 星野 VoiceDesign recipe Claude had been generating from for the whole campaign — a Chinese prompt he had never been shown word by word or glossed, only referred to by arm names (V1 no-rush, V3 soft); he adds “since i worry you are looking in the wrong directions. you have traditionally been unreliable at predicting voices”.

  • Claude’s diagnosis: 高音 means high-pitched — a register order, not a color

it’s not an on-ramp, it’s a step. it goes into too dense too fast. also that denseness is not something i prefer.

  • The writing: The self-talk page’s opening paragraph, specifically its second sentence: “Somewhere between the tasks there is a voice appraising, replaying, instructing, warning, and it feels less like an activity than like a readout — a report on how things are.” He opened with “i don’t relaly understand this part”.
  • Claude’s diagnosis: an on-ramp sentence’s job is recognition, a nod from lived experience with zero new concepts, and that sentence demanded two learnings

  • The writing: The self-talk page’s first sentence: “Most days have a voice running through them”. He added “this is not an explanation, it’s a hook.”

B fine but the second sentence doesn’t tie into the first that well. look at the first and second sentence and tell me what the connective tissue is between them. they are not related, there is no connective tissue in someone’s mind that can link the two unless they actively do the cognitive effort.

Session summaries

  • 791da926 — Across six days (2026-08-06 to 08-11) the owner asked for one thing in many forms: get the Tsumugu EP1 cast voices right and shipped to tsumugu.cc — first hunting 阮草’s “smile”, then building a failure catalog and a stack audit after ten bakeoffs produced the same output, then rebuilding 金多恩 (Sohee), 阿迪 (Ryan) and 星野 reference by reference through ear-ruled HTML boards, plus site-player fixes, cost breakdowns, and a final loudness normalization. Claude’s fixes were overwhelmingly mechanisms for its own memory and process rather than writing changes — the ATTEMPT-CATALOG check law, the FAILURE-BOOK, the OPEN+FULL-PATH prompt hook, the assembly rule, the two-tier and model-direct laws, runaway bounds and stage watchdogs — with the handful of comprehension complaints in this session (Chinese board chrome, an unglossed “fine-tune” remark, a lost-thread reply, and the never-glossed 高音 in the voice prompt) answered by an English-only memory rule, an in-chat gloss, a re-grounded reply, and a clause-by-clause glossed prompt board.
  • a0110fef — Across roughly two weeks the owner moved from Tsumugu canon work (B1 roster, 小圖’s local-AI grounding, episode-format research) into authoring four all-Chinese WoW podcast episodes for his TAN project, then into a fifteen-plus-round local TTS voice bake-off, a 28-state mood bank, a 1.5 GB file compaction, and an EP1 re-render — asking throughout for material grounded in sources he supplied, delivered in surfaces he could judge by ear without guesswork. Claude’s fixes to the comprehension complaints were mostly local: one authoring rule (“a number does one job in a scene”), a mechanical rename of an inconsistent pet name across four scripts, and repeated rebuilds of the HTML review boards — labeled, English-chrome, one voice per player, showing only what still needed judging — with the last of these turned into a structural board check rather than another promise.
  • 2b4e2033 — Across three days the owner drove a full authoring cycle on the TAN Chinese-learning gaming podcast: re-author EP1 from scratch, sign a cast roster, build a QA gate, design and author EP2 beat by beat under continuous line-level correction, scrub retired canon (阮草’s best-piece, 金多恩’s notebook, the warlock roster) out of every file, and then reopen and restructure EP1 around the personality-test frame — while repeatedly asking Claude to build machinery so he would not have to keep repeating the same corrections. Claude’s fixes ran along two tracks: line-and-beat regenerations of the scripts on his notes, and a growing enforcement layer — qa_gate.py with roster, dead-slot, voices, vocab-placement and LOCKED.md rule tiers, the gate-authoring-direction.sh hook with beat-chain and PROOF-OF-READ branches, AUTHORING-CHECKLIST.md, DIALOGUE-STANDARDS.md, DIALOGUE-RULES r17/r18, LOCKED.md, and a canon scrub recorded in CANON-SCRUB-2026-07-26.md.
  • 3ebaa4b6 — Across nine days the owner drove a full canon rebuild for the Tsumugu graded-reader series — scrapping AI-locked stale character docs, deriving arcs, values and moral cores for the whole cast, authoring five book spines plus Book 1 prose, forging a deep-conversation template through the 白龍 vigil scene, then cleaning the published knowledge-base surfaces and opening three personal wings (fitness, fashion, travel) with a new personal writing register, ending in the tan audio-library project. Claude’s fixes for the reader-context complaints were mostly rule-level entries added to standing instruments — READING-BANDS.md curriculum riders, the “No Unpublished-Story Internals” and “Nothing appears without context” rules plus site-wide whole–part–whole in Writing Standards, the ears-only law in PRD-tan — with full regenerations rather than patches for the story texts (the 沈文 doc, the 白龍 origin, the vigil), and a memory entry or sweep behind each root-cause it traced back to a stale source document.
  • ed0c0734 — Across three days Wedge asked for his /personal page to be rebuilt to answer “who am I”, was interviewed for the material, and then spent most of the session rejecting the prose Claude produced from it — demanding first-principles diagnosis before every regeneration and repeatedly striking writing that stacked facts, compressed reasoning out of sentences, used vault-internal vocabulary, broke references, or opened on a claim with no ground under it; the session ended with the page reframed as a profile indexing his work, and with his question about whether the model had degraded. Claude’s fixes ran the full range: line patches, full regenerations, a new generator file (02 - System/The Generator - Selfhood.md) amended twice, L73a added to Writing Standards, heading rules and a mechanical checker added to the Two Egos QA, five memory files written, two convergence experiments (19-test and 5-test batteries) that both returned null, and a Grok comparison run — with Claude’s own conclusion that the batteries and detectors were the wrong instrument and that only changing what it generated from (his selected material, his reasoning) ever changed the output.
  • a6497868 — He asked for an A/B of the old wiki docs against an updated writing standard and then for a full automated pipeline — research lane, one-shot regeneration, binary article-level QA gate, archive and promote — to rewrite ~320 wiki pages that “don’t read well to a new reader”, ruling along the way on opening moves, three-strike halts, cuts and fuses, and finally on splitting the work so Opus researches and Fable writes. Claude’s fixes were a regenerated Writing Standards (148+ numbered laws, three rebuild attempts), the opening laws L20a/L20b/L20c/L20a-i/L20a-ii derived from his struck and accepted openers, a Rejected Specimens corpus every later generation reads, a Regeneration Checklist with proof-of-read quotes grepped against disk, and the scripts regen-check.py, regen-route.py and regen-promote.py that compute the guarantees instead of asking the writer for them.
  • bff701ae — He asked for a deep-dive research block on Grok Bot and then for a fleet structure — what each bot does, prompts to create them, colors, and a diagram plus operating directions published on his wiki. Claude’s fixes amounted to two research boards, a five-bot fleet page, paste-ready bot prompts, a handoff for Grok, and — after he said he wasn’t sure what “single task” meant — the Bot Operating Rules page defining the term as one standing duty, with a new §The Cold Open section added to the Writing Standards.
  • d425cb0a — He asked Claude to recover a bots thread he had lost track of and rebuild the fleet state, then five days later to add a podcast-summarizer bot, feed its synthesis into the 多恩刊 report, and make 多恩刊’s sentences natural at EP1’s vocabulary gate and style. Claude’s fixes were the verified fleet roster read from the Grok Bot app’s own store, the Ear bot spec with a real specimen packet and pin 5 in 多恩刊, and — for the sentences — a measurement showing the gate was not the fault, the line-as-unit generator recorded as DEAD, EP1’s exchange engine written as standing law, a new gate script, and an A/B board with both narrations.
  • 96f02cea — Across 07-17 to 08-01 he asked for a wiki Moral Core page extended with his own characters, then 阮草’s arc rebuilt on Kiki’s Delivery Service with a visible turn scene, then the WoW podcast work: scrub stale canon, research and rule the EP5-11 map, and re-author EP1-5 under his layers/direction/earned-sight laws, ending in EP1 compaction and the EP2 break board. Claude’s fixes moved from re-explaining and regenerating individual drafts to written instruments and machinery — memory entries (explain-one-thread, legibility, depth-from-why), DIALOGUE-RULES.md rules 1-16, a CLAUDE.md authoring gate requiring a visible simulation block, and a PreToolUse hook — but the comprehension complaints kept recurring, ending with three rejected cold opens and a REDO protocol declaring prior material dead by default.
  • ac641f7e — The same conversation recorded under the non-worktree project path, running 07-17 to 07-24 16:47: Moral Core page, the 阮草/Kiki arc rebuild and the 星野 mountain-house dialogue, then the canon scrub, WoW episode research and outlines, the EP1-5 re-author with component beats, ending on the SFX library build. Claude’s fixes were the same ladder — chat re-explanations and whole-scene regenerations first, then persisted instruments (memory laws, DIALOGUE-RULES.md including the Processing Law, Earned Sight, and the Component Beat rule, plus the CLAUDE.md gate and hook).
  • a42e1296 — Across two days the owner moved EP1 authoring back to Fable under heavy direction, asked for a working system, a break board, character strands, and then dictated the episode line by line while Claude rendered, recorded and stitched. Claude’s fixes were mostly rules and documents — READING-SURFACE RULE, FACTS BREATHE, NEVER COMPRESS DIALOGUE, the RENDER CONTRACT in HOW-WE-WORK §5, tally rows 2/12/13/14/15 — plus board rebuilds that moved its bookkeeping behind a click and put lock, edit and cut controls in his hands; the compression rule he rejected outright as a rule minted from the surface of a complaint, and only the derived volley form (one idea per turn, a receiving turn between facts) survived.
  • c627ec70 — The owner asked for the tsumugu-ed.com homepage to be stripped to a search-first Google-shaped hero, then for an SEO and analytics audit and a full remediation plan and handoff for Grok. Claude delegated edits to Opus, shipped the hero change live, pulled Search Console and Cloudflare data, and wrote a PRD plus two handoff documents; nothing in the session touched the writing-clarity family.
  • b4d1fe41 — An Opus session picked up the EP1 details handoff, audited the board, wrote and shipped a wiki page on working with a model that cannot remember, added filler and transition material to his dictation, locked EP1, and pushed the new render to tsumugu.cc while holding EP2 back for its canon collisions. Its fixes were mostly machinery — a dead-name Bash gate, a real save button on the board, an untranslated-line sweep, tail and voice-list checks — and on the space/filler question it produced an analysis (receiving turns owed, junk beat at the S3→J1 seam) that could not be placed because his browser edits had never reached disk.
  • ed6968ef — The owner asked for an inbox fold into the wiki and then for the retired ‘odds-man / foodie-gamer’ frame to be eliminated everywhere after it kept reappearing on the live cast pages. Claude found the real serving repo, scrubbed 44 files and 132 instances across every tree, created RETIRED-FRAMES.md as the single tombstone and wired a PreToolUse gate so the frame cannot be reintroduced; no writing-clarity complaints appear.
  • 14a3d428 — The owner published EP1 to tsumugu.cc and then spent the session ruling by ear on voice, pace, tail truncation, conversational timing, and R2 hosting, while asking that every fix be generalized into a production line. Claude’s fixes to the comprehension complaints were procedural — an explicit ear-check protocol, blind sheets with stated reply formats, and a single checklist of everything owed to his ear — after he twice said he could not tell what he was being asked to listen for.
  • 7351320d — The parallel/continuing thread of the same EP1 publishing work, running a day longer: blind strain sheets, voice auditions, the Pepsi-challenge insight that clip strips are sip tests, the 阿迪 A75 and 星野 S3+ locks, and the production-line migration. Claude’s fixes for the two comprehension complaints were the same protocol work — stated judgment criteria, reply formats, and a single owed-to-your-ear checklist — plus the standing endurance-audition law that replaced short clip strips with multi-minute conversation runs.
  • ee8a64a0 — Across three days the owner asked for a reusable four-pane terminal workspace (the quad tmux launcher), then an exact visual match between Ghostty and Apple Terminal — font, weight, saturation, line and character pitch, window padding — and finally custom Catppuccin colors for Claude Code’s own diff backgrounds. Claude’s fixes were all configuration and diagnostic work: writing and rewriting the quad launcher and presets, tuning ~/.config/ghostty/config, pixel-measuring side-by-side screenshots with Swift/CoreGraphics, and tracing the Claude Code binary to prove the diff renderer resolves colors through the base theme so custom overrides can never reach it; no complaint about writing clarity appears anywhere in this session.
  • 222e8ab9 — The owner was rebuilding Tsumugu’s characters from their moral cores — 阮草 scrapped and rebuilt as a Kiki-style burnout-and-recovery arc with mát tay mushroom magic, then 金多恩 and 小圖 — plus the series-wide third-grid structure, the interactive THIRD-GRID.html, and a B1L06 character-intro draft. For the legibility complaints Claude’s fixes were three permanent memory laws (explain one thread at a time, depth-derive-from-why, the legibility law), an appended clause to the deep-conversation processing law, and repeated full regenerations: the 阮草 arc card, the 小圖 book-by-book account, and five successive rewrites of the 「影子」 dialogue.
  • 2cc70d72 — Across the session he was building a reusable anchor-line and voice system for the seven-character cast — line sets per register, then pace slowed to learner speed, then a genuinely distinct 阿迪 voice, then the cast pages and a full EP1 render — ruling everything by ear. The reader-context fixes amounted to one-off rewrites: Claude dropped its canon jargon and explained the cloning mechanic in plain words, stopped putting unanswerable questions in front of him and made those calls itself, and defined the pace metric he could not read, then demoted it to a description and started explaining later metrics unprompted.
  • 3481acab — He was sourcing and assembling a small SFX library for the podcast and tsumugu.cc — research lane, Sonniss bundle, Freesound pulls, ear-check page — alongside archiving the engine repo and clearing 40 GB of course media. The two fixes were re-reading the dense research report against the goal he actually stated (texturing, not a permanent portable library) and rewriting a one-line DevTools instruction as six numbered steps.
  • abc605cb — He asked Claude to proceed with the open site work and flag before heavy workflows, which produced a four-thread analytics and Cloudflare status report ending in decisions for him. The fix was a full regeneration of the report in plain language after he said he did not understand what was being asked of him, with each item restated as what’s happening, why it matters, and a go/hold-off call.
  • e78463c6 — He asked for a review of the three-levers journal document and the Opus authoring handoff, then for the levers to be turned into a WPW-format wiki page, put in Top of Mind, and pushed. No complaint in this family appears in the session.
  • f033ef8e — He asked how to find good sound effects for the podcast and tsumugu.cc, then had a Fable research lane spun up on building a small SFX library. No complaint in this family appears in the session.
  • c78690e0 — He ran a long canon session — pairing web, visa stakes, a Grok compaction, the odds-man retirement, 小圖’s local-AI grounding, and three research lanes on episode format — asking repeatedly for research to be made durable and mapped onto the project. The one borderline fix was Claude committing the raw lane report to EPISODE-FORMAT.md and writing a synthesis of what the research meant for the books after he asked what it all meant for them.
  • 18570265 — He asked for an analytics review of tsumugu-ed.com and a monetization read, which turned into fixing the Bing block, the www duplicate, the cache chain and the sitemap, plus creating Cloudflare and Search Console credentials by hand. Four of the five fixes in this family were rewrites of Claude’s own instructions into literal, step-numbered form after he could not follow them; the fifth was Claude abandoning instruction and performing the file move itself.
  • 9b7fe846 — He asked for a portfolio layout designed from a Notion page and got three built directions, then asked where the files were and had them moved to the Desktop. No complaint in this family appears in the session.
  • 3211579b — Across a full day he asked for a top-to-bottom minimal redesign of tsumugu.cc centered on the podcast, then drove it page by page (episode reader, library, cast, about, blog, seal, waveforms, tap-to-reveal, SEO and deploy). Claude’s fixes to the two comprehension complaints were re-explanations — first a rendered three-version demo and a single distinction replacing a taxonomy, then a full regeneration of all ten Round-2 design cards after admitting the options had been derived from generic interface logic instead of the site’s pedagogy.
  • 94d044a2 — He dictated EP2 podcast beats (the 可口可樂 transliteration joke, 阮草’s late arrival, the Kul Tiras rename, the farmer-killing dark card) and had Claude inject, restructure and mirror them onto the break board. No reader-context complaints; Claude’s work was structural — script surgery, gate notes, board mirroring, a transliteration research bank, and a role ruling that Claude organizes structure while lines stay volley-faithful to his dictation.
  • 6e22f6a2 — A multi-day voice-production run: stop the EP1 render, fix the Taiwan-accent erhua rule, rebuild references, then a long hunt for 阮草’s uplifted voice through boards, tapestries and auditions. Two comprehension fixes landed: a standing rule that board notes and labels are English-only, and a clean-board mechanism stripping every already-ruled item off any board so only what needs judging is shown.
  • c1656534 — The same voice-production thread as 6e22f6a2 captured under a second session id, continuing past it into the from-scratch 阮草 recasting (recipe design, seed sweeps, age-clause rounds, smile-dose ladder). The same two fixes appear: English-only board chrome, and stripping the board to only the items awaiting his ear.
  • 2d02a090 — Working the EP2 cold open beat by beat, he dictated the Kul Tiras / 酷 / 可口可樂 material and repeatedly checked whether the characters and facts were resolvable by the learner-listener. Claude’s fixes were line patches plus one real mechanism change — checking every character against the show’s own vocabulary spine (當代中文課程) instead of native-speaker familiarity, which killed 倉庫的庫 and 麥克風 and replaced them with owned words.
  • 11240225 — He asked for a macro-level tracking board for the B1–B4 book spines arranged as four seasons of a TV series, with the stale beats audited against solidified cast canon. Claude fanned out nineteen agents, produced the Series Board with 122 verified spine flags and 47 macro-doc flags, and edited nothing in canon.
  • 533e12ac — He asked for 50+ podcast topic candidates mined from the llm-knowledge-base, rejected the resulting bank as generated from research instead of from the six students, and demanded a hard cross-session rule that Claude state its reading of an ask before executing. Claude deleted the bank, restored the harvest file, wrote the least-cost-interpretation article into the wiki, and installed the echo rule.
  • e4e9d3ef — The same topic-bank thread, taken through the echo rule’s installation into CLAUDE.md plus a prompt-submit hook, then a lens-first re-derivation of the topic bank from each student’s situation. Claude struck the wrong 星野 craft (photography → lantern/light-and-shadow) from its own memory, traced and struck the unsigned 沈文 characterization he rejected, and rebuilt the bank to 62 candidates.
  • 2a87e150 — He asked for a full check of the live tsumugu.cc with recommendations that keep the minimal style while adding features and design beats for the Chinese learner. Claude crawled the site, ran two research lanes on comparable products, and delivered the outer-loop diagnosis (no door, no path to the people, no follow, no memory of position) with ruled-but-unexecuted defects listed.
  • dd59a048 — Continuing that audit, he pushed back on browser-local progress storage as unusable for a multi-year learner, ordered the ruling written to disk rather than memory, and asked for a lean QA gate that catches least-cost interpretation in feature reasoning. Claude re-explained the misunderstood recommendation, found his own 07-02 PRD that already answered the durability problem, and rewrote the gate design after he demanded the user, the build and the gate’s purpose be stated first.
  • 1c04cecd — He worked the EP1 reference-repair handoff: confirm the chosen voices by ear, repoint the render at the assembled references, then sweep the machine of failed voice generations while keeping every ear-approved file and the generation methodology. Claude built listen boards and a classified deletion manifest, executed a 2,557-file sweep, sealed the Traditional/Simplified feed split three ways, and rebuilt the board when he flagged it was showing superseded references.
  • b75725b1 — He asked for a rich tap system on tsumugu.cc — tap for the whole word, characters tappable inside the word window, tap and hover popups as two settings, site-wide — and demanded a ledger of everything asked versus delivered. Claude echoed the spec, served the build on localhost to show the blocked file:// popups were not missing functionality, then ran a 21-agent build whose eight ledger items all passed real-browser click QA.
  • 7eb98a40 — Across two days he asked for a Personal section on his site plus two long wiki pages (the two meanings of ego, then catching the inner voice) written from research banks, ruling on placement, register, and every opener by eye. Claude’s fixes moved from patching to whole regenerations, then to written laws (no-patch, names-in-footnotes, chat-voice-is-the-generation-voice, regeneration-is-total), a QA script for self-regard tells, and finally — after ten struck openers on the reader-assumption complaint — a research run over admired writers that produced the Opening Moves Catalog and an abstract-block opening.
  • 91d0ed12 — He ran the Fable write lane over his wiki, reviewing openers and pages set by set and striking them until each one worked, then handed the remaining waves to Grok when tokens ran out. Claude’s fixes were a cascade of instruments — the Rejected Specimens file, the priming/on-ramp/mirror/copular laws in the Opening Moves Catalog, the W/P shape law in Writing Standards, a research→structure→prose step with an audited skeleton, and finally the positive generation stance that replaced the ban list and ended eighteen strikes.
  • 7e56bd54 — He asked Claude to write up the bottom-up opener episode as research, then wrote intro slates for dozens of regen pages, and spent most of the session designing the Worldviews & the Political Order wing — its structure, templates, titles, banks, and twenty pages. Claude’s fixes here were mostly instruments and analysis rather than prose laws: the Prohibition Loop page, the Opening Doors page recording the inventory-in-the-opening fault, the corpus catalog and its corrected detector, the owner-positions interview file, and the Grok bias/sweep handoffs.
  • 9e534a56 — One turn: he pasted eight existing intros and asked for rewrites under the generator stance, pointing at The Prohibition Loop page and the generator memory as the principles. Claude read both files and returned two doors per intro; no complaint of any kind appears in the session.
  • 604f7037 — Across one user turn he asked Claude to fix the writing on the live personal Positions page. Claude diagnosed the page as a compression of the political wing that kept its pointers while leaving the antecedents behind, then regenerated it — resolving each orphaned referent from the source pages, breaking up a seven-topic dump paragraph, and cutting the “100%” tic — with nothing pushed live.
  • f8f20815 — He was building the Selfhood generator as an addition to the locked Generator, then cutting Writing Standards from 156 laws down to a short instrument, and finally running an A–F blind test of the generator on the Positions page. Claude’s fixes were instrument surgery — carrying the locked act byte-identical, deleting accreted commentary, retiring the 156-law standards to the archive — plus three verbatim hard rules installed in /Users/n1/.claude/CLAUDE.md; the writing complaints in this session were about grievance framing and the who-cares rule, not reader context.
  • 27b969a0 — He brought the claudish-to-english repo and asked, without installing anything, for Claude to simply produce the plain-English writing shown in its screenshot. Claude derived six rules from the screenshot and installed them as a “Reply register — plain English” section in /Users/n1/.claude/CLAUDE.md with a per-turn hook echo in /Users/n1/.claude/settings.json, then loosened the “keep every fact” rule to “keep the facts the reader needs” when he said the versions were too packed.
  • eb510d5c — Over a full day he pushed on one thing: sentences he could not read — carried link clauses, undefined house words, referents cut out from under sentences, a face compared to a label with no connection established — demanding each time that the fix live in the generator rather than in the sentence. Claude’s fixes escalated from in-chat explanations to a nine-reader jargon-source audit, a plain-words rewrite of both generators, a third Selfhood Plain generator, a five-step production order with a chain step (2b) before any paragraph that introduces a new thing, and finally a four-part definition of “proper context” — all of which he declared failures in the session’s last turn.

The three analysts

Analyst 1: the fix pattern

FINDINGS

1. The record contains 220 logged instances; about 195 are distinct events. Twenty-five rows are the same conversation written to a second or third project path — sessions 96f02cea, ac641f7e and 222e8ab9 are one conversation (07-17 to 07-24), 14a3d428 and 7351320d are one, 6e22f6a2 and c1656534 are one, and a0110fef’s 08-04 and 08-05 board complaints duplicate the latter pair. The complaint appears in 30 of the 44 session summaries across ten weeks. It appears on podcast scripts, wiki pages, HTML listening boards, shell instructions, a Cloudflare status report, a personal profile page, and Claude’s own chat replies. It is not a problem of one surface or one domain.

2. Classified by what the fix was, most fixes were another draft. Eighty were regenerations of the text. Thirty-eight edited a standard or an instrument. Thirty-one were line patches. Twenty-six were nothing visible. Nineteen added a ban or a rule. Eleven were memory writes (five distinct files, tripled by the duplicate session logs). Eight were apologies only. Seven built a checker or detector. Adding regenerations, line patches, apologies and nothing-visible together: 145 of 220 responses — 66 percent — changed no instrument at all. At least 71 of 220 left nothing on disk, including the whole run from 08-18 09:42 to 08-19 08:01 in session ed0c0734, where nine consecutive strikes on the personal page produced diagnosis in chat and no artifact.

3. Classified by the record’s own mechanism-or-rule field, 79 were rules, 70 were mechanisms, 71 were neither. Neither class held. The same fault came back inside the same session in 189 of 220 rows, 86 percent. Rules recurred in 72 of 79 cases, 91 percent. Mechanisms recurred in 59 of 70 cases, 84 percent. That seven-point gap is the entire measured advantage of a mechanism over a rule in ten weeks of data.

4. The fixes that “held” held because the conversation stopped. Thirty-one rows record no recurrence. Twenty-nine of those 31 are the last logged instance in their session file, or the only instance in it. Session 3ebaa4b6’s ears-only law in /Users/n1/Projects/tan/PRD-tan.md was written at 07-22 09:07 and the session ends. Session a6497868’s owns-the-term law L20a-i was written at 08-13 08:17 and the session ends. Session ed0c0734’s journal-summaries fix was written at 08-19 19:28 and the session ends. The two exceptions are not prose fixes: cutting the EP2 room from six speakers to four (2b4e2033, 07-26 08:41) and relabelling a save button on an HTML board (b4d1fe41, 07-28 20:50). No fix in the record is shown surviving a session that kept going.

5. Rules were violated in the same session that wrote them, repeatedly, sometimes within minutes. In session a42e1296 on 07-28 19:17 he said “NEVER COMPRESS DIALOGUE… this is a standing rule FOREVER,” and it was minted into LOCKED.md, HOW-WE-WORK.md §5 and VIOLATION-TALLY.md row 15 with a speech-act count before rendering. Six minutes later, 19:23: “no you are compressing again. ugh this is so annoying.” Three minutes after that, at 19:26, he struck the rule itself: “your rule that you just minted and permanent is wrong because you produced output that is completely unsatisfactory.” In session a6497868, law L20a — the opening paragraph names the whole, one term maximum — was written at 08-12 20:36; forty minutes later at 21:16 he struck an opening reading “Interiority runs on one causal chain: a past event, the false belief it installed…” and said “i don’t even know, and if i don’t know it already fails as an intro sentence.” In session 7eb98a40 on 08-11 08:15 a sentence-level density law was proposed and he rejected it in the very next turn — “that reading is too flat… why don’t you just talk the same way you talk in this chat?” — and Claude withdrew it as “a mechanical count minted from the strike’s silhouette.” In session eb510d5c on 08-21 10:48, Claude used the house rule “Every link carries a clause” as undefined jargon inside the same message where it was diagnosing undefined jargon; its own words: “I used it on you as jargon, unexplained, in the same message where I was diagnosing unexplained jargon.”

6. The memories were read in later sessions and the fault was produced anyway. Five distinct memory files were written as fixes. /Users/n1/.claude/projects/-Users-n1/memory/explain-one-thread-at-a-time.md was written on 07-17 after “i need you to be more cogent… they read like a bunch of patchworked ideas that i can’t follow intellectually with my human brain.” Its instruction is explicit: “Unpack every internal label into what it actually is the first time it appears.” Ten days later, session a42e1296 07-27 15:59: “when you say, 75% of the writing labor into the break, what does that mean exactly?” Same session 16:27: “i don’t really understand U1 U2 S1 etc. language.” Same session 07-28 09:00: “who is ‘a stranger’s?’ they all know each other. why did you write ‘stranger’.” Five weeks later, session eb510d5c 08-21 10:48, the same fault. That memory is indexed in /Users/n1/.claude/projects/-Users-n1/memory/MEMORY.md, which loads at the start of every session, including this one. The second case is faster: /Users/n1/.claude/projects/-Users-n1/memory/generate-from-what-he-wants.md was written in session ed0c0734 on 08-18 09:13 as the fix for the “division” complaint, and the same fault recurred at 09:20 (“this is the third time im rejecting your wording”), then again at 09:27, 09:31, 09:33, 09:38, 09:39, 09:42 and 09:49 — eight more times in the same morning. The memory system states its own verdict on disk, in /Users/n1/.claude/projects/-Users-n1/memory/internal-docs-are-instruments.md: “A memory was not enough to stop this — strike 2 happened after this file existed.”

7. Many of the fixes were themselves written in undefined house terms, so the instrument taught the fault it banned. DIALOGUE-RULES.md rule 14, the layers law, is “door → push → competence → soul”; in session 2b4e2033 on 07-24 18:52 he had to ask “what’s Door, Push, Competence, Soul?” — the rule written to make writing followable was four undefined labels. The enforcement layer built on 07-25 uses “RECEIVES,” “the receipt law,” “dead-slot” and “the hinge test.” HOW-WE-WORK.md, the file the a42e1296 fixes were written into, used “the break,” which is the exact term he could not read at 07-27 15:59. EP02-OUTLINE-v7 labelled removed beats “HOLE,” which produced 07-26 08:35: “what is this ‘hole’ you keep referring to?” — and the same word came back as H-codes on the board two days later: “your ‘holes’ is missing a lot of context. i don’t understand most. it’s too condensed.” /Users/n1/Projects/llm-knowledge-base/02 - System/Writing Standards.md indexes its rules as L20a, L20b, L20a-i, L73a, L24; the rebuilt file on disk today still carries 74 L-code references, including bare parentheticals like “(was L78)” and “(L35, L36)” with no key on the page. Session 91d0ed12 added “W/P notation,” “the copular execution law,” “the step-height law,” “thesis-atom,” “prestudy” and “priming.” The audit he ordered on 08-21, /Users/n1/Projects/llm-knowledge-base/01 - Workbench/jargon-source-audit-2026-08-21.md, found 148 such lines across nine instruments and had to rewrite “the gotcha,” “the disease-door,” “a card,” “thesis-atom” and “prestudy” out of the generator, where they had sat since 08-13.

8. There was a standing rule that licensed exactly that. /Users/n1/.claude/projects/-Users-n1/memory/internal-docs-are-instruments.md, written 08-13 in session a6497868, says instruments “get numbered findable laws and completeness. That is all,” and that nothing governing wiki pages — register, opening moves, whole–part–whole, the QA gate — touches them. For eight weeks that exempted every fix from the standard the fixes existed to enforce. A floor requiring an instrument to state what its own terms mean was added to that file only on 2026-08-21, after the jargon audit, one day before today’s four strikes.

9. The fault has now been reproduced inside the fix, twice, in the last 24 hours. On 08-21 18:35 step 2b was added to /Users/n1/Projects/llm-knowledge-base/02 - System/The Generator - Selfhood.md: before any paragraph introducing a new thing, write the chain of what the reader must hold. /Users/n1/.claude/projects/-Users-n1/memory/context-on-the-page.md records what happened next: “the first chain I wrote asserted link 4 instead of showing it — the mistake reproduced inside the fix.” Today’s strike is the same shape. /Users/n1/Projects/llm-knowledge-base/01 - Workbench/label-abc-2026-08-22/RESULT.md diagnoses “a face does the same job” as “the move named instead of made… produced by holding the generator’s list of moves while writing.” The generator was being executed as a checklist during composition, and that is what produced the sentence he could not read.

10. There is a measured result showing the checks made the writing worse. The blind board at /Users/n1/Projects/llm-knowledge-base/01 - Workbench/label-abc-2026-08-22/board.html ran three versions of one page, each under a different generator. The winner, C, was written under the locked original act alone. The two versions written with the added checks in hand lost. The generator file records the conclusion: “The additions were checks, and a writer checking while he writes is editing, not explaining.” Session eb510d5c’s 18:21 diagnosis says the same thing about a different input: “When the page that already exists is in front of me while I write, my output tracks it. It tracks the facts, the order, and the length.”

11. He has been asking for a production-level fix for five weeks and kept receiving output-level ones. 07-17 10:08: “i need you to be more cogent with your explanations generally.” 07-25 17:51: “please come up with a method to hold everything in your memory before you author an episode.” 08-18 09:42: “regeneration of whatever is making you write these stacked facts and pass it off as writing.” 08-19 09:38: “please help diagnose this in a way that the generator doesn’t generate again.” 08-21 10:46: “im not asking for what the definition means, im asking for, why are you making nonsensical definitions and how do i make you stop making them.” 08-21 18:17: “no. solutions are not in the sentence. solutions are in the generator.” Across that whole span, 145 of 220 responses were another draft, another explanation, or nothing.

12. The three changes in the record that did close a family were all changes of input, not rules. In session 7eb98a40 ten regenerated openers were struck one after another under bans; the family closed on 08-11 at 10:13 only when openers were derived from a researched corpus of real specimens, and the record notes it explicitly as “a change of input, not a new ban.” In session ed0c0734 on 08-18 09:49 the interview switched from what-happened questions to why-questions, because a paragraph with no reasoning in it can only be a list. In session 2d02a090 on 08-04 11:33 Claude stopped checking vocabulary against native-speaker familiarity and started checking it against the show’s own spine, private/dangdai-vocab, 4,961 entries; the untaught-word complaint did not return in that session. Session ed0c0734’s own summary states the conclusion: the test batteries and detectors “were the wrong instrument and… only changing what it generated from ever changed the output.”

ANSWER

The fixes failed because almost none of them changed how the sentence gets made. Seventy-nine were rules about what the output must contain, 145 of the 220 responses touched no instrument at all, and the rules that were written were violated inside the same hour they were written — six minutes for NEVER COMPRESS DIALOGUE on 07-28, forty minutes for L20a on 08-12, seven minutes for the memory written on 08-18. A rule can only be consulted after the sentence exists, and the record names the reason it is never consulted usefully: Claude checks the sentence against the argument in its own head, where every connection is already made, instead of against the page above it. Worse, the fixes were written in the same compressed house register they were banning — “door/push/competence/soul,” “the break,” “HOLE,” “L20a,” “thesis-atom,” “prestudy” — under a memory that from 08-13 explicitly exempted instruments from plain words, so the last thing read before writing taught the fault. The mechanisms in the record did barely better (84 percent recurrence against 91) because they were mechanisms of checking rather than of producing, and the 08-22 blind board measured that checks held in the writing hand make the page worse than no checks at all. If anything changes, make it this: the resolution check must be run by something that has not read the argument. After the draft exists and before it reaches him, a separate agent whose entire context is the draft text — no bank, no interview, no generator, no prior page — reads it once and returns the list of words and references it cannot resolve from what came above them; that list drives regeneration of those paragraphs, not patches. That would have held where the rules did not, because it does not depend on Claude noticing its own gap, which is the one thing the record shows it cannot do: step 2b was written on 08-21 to force exactly this check by hand, and the first chain written under it asserted the link instead of showing it, because a chain written by the head that wrote the sentence inherits the head’s connections and a reader with no context does not.

Analyst 2: recurrence and costumes

RECURRENCE AND COSTUMES — findings

1. The complaint is not occasional. It is the background rate of the working relationship.

The record holds 217 instance rows. Three sessions are the same conversation logged under three project paths (96f02cea, ac641f7e, 222e8ab9), and two more pairs double-log the voice work (14a3d428/7351320d, 6e22f6a2/c1656534), so the distinct count is roughly 190. Those 190 fall on 33 of the 40 calendar days between 2026-07-14 and 2026-08-21. That is about five instances per working day, sustained for six weeks. The seven clear days are mostly days with little session activity, not days when the fix was holding.

2. Within a session, the complaint always came back.

188 of the 217 rows are marked recurred_in_session: yes — 87 percent. Almost every “no” is the last instance in its session, so the session ended before it could recur. Genuine within-session holds are rare enough to name: the four-speaker cut (2b4e2033, 07-26T08:41), the clean-board strip (a0110fef and 6e22f6a2, 08-05T13:28), the demoted pace metric (2cc70d72, 07-25T09:16), and the re-derived design options (3211579b, 07-31T10:08). Everything else recurred, usually within the hour. On 2026-08-21 (eb510d5c) it recurred at 10:44, 10:46, 10:48, 10:49, 10:50, 11:07, 18:14, 18:16, 18:21, 18:31, 18:35, 18:38 twice, and 18:43 — fourteen times in one day, ending with him commissioning this audit.

3. The complaint has worn at least 28 different surfaces, and it crossed every project.

In order of first appearance: character craft docs (07-14, “who looks the part”), image-generation prompts (07-14), graded-reader lessons (07-16, 蠟燭), backstory prose (07-16, 白龍), long dialogue scenes (07-16, the vigil), Claude’s own chat replies (07-17, “i don’t understand this can you explain?”), structured craft tables (07-17, MORAL-CORE), public wiki pages (07-20, “not good reading for normal people”), personal blog prose (07-21, “there’s no context for this”), audio specs (07-22, PRD-tan), terminal instructions (07-22, “where do i paste the token”), web-UI walkthroughs (07-22, “skip role grants”), analytics reports (07-24, “this is my first time running a website”), research dumps (07-24, “what does that mean for me?”), Chinese podcast scripts (07-22 through 08-04), audio review deliverables (07-24, interleaved wavs), checker output (07-25, flagged lines with no context), HTML ruling boards (07-27, “i have a hard time reading these trays”), board chrome in Chinese (08-04, 08-07), voice-recipe prompts (08-11, 高音), site design options (07-31), wiki opening sentences (08-12, “Interiority”), bot prompts (08-12, “single task”), dictionary-style openers (08-13), personal profile prose (08-17 to 08-19), memory notes Claude wrote about him (08-18, “including that memory note I just dumped”), the Writing Standards themselves (08-21), and the generator file’s own house words (08-21: “the gotcha”, “the disease-door”, “a card”, “thesis-atom”, “prestudy”). These span tsumugu-core, tan, llm-knowledge-base, the two websites, Cloudflare and Search Console setup, and the Grok bot fleet. No single project’s instrument could ever have contained it, and every fix except the two written into /Users/n1/.claude/CLAUDE.md was filed inside one project.

4. His words are the same every time; only his vocabulary rotates.

Compare 2026-08-11T08:46 (7eb98a40) — “it’s too flat. assumes too much. it has hubris. what does ‘most days’ mean, what does ‘voice’ mean? you assume the reader knows too much.” — with 2026-08-21T18:31 (eb510d5c) — “it’s still writign while assuming the reader knows more than they do. which is a big no no.” Ten days apart, same sentence. Compare both with 2026-07-24T15:31 (96f02cea): “you have to treat the curious person like they don’t know that much.” That is a month earlier. What rotates is the word he reaches for: “i don’t understand” (07-16 through 08-21), “no context” (07-21, 08-21), “too condensed” (07-28), “too compressed” (08-18), “too dense” (08-13), “patchwork” (07-17, 07-24, 08-12), “no on-ramp” (07-21, 08-11, 08-13, 08-15), “not relatable” (08-13), “nonsensical” (08-21), “stacking facts” (08-18), “jargon unexplained” (08-21). Because his label changed, each session filed the fault as a new family and put the fix in a new file.

5. He said out loud that he had said it before, twelve times, starting on day eleven.

2026-07-24T10:41 (a0110fef): “i feel like im complaining baout the same things to you multiple times but nothing is changing.” 2026-07-25T17:51 (2b4e2033): “i really don’t like to remind you everytime this so please come up with a method to hold everything in your memory before you author an episode.” 2026-08-07T10:00 (791da926): “the reference check has Chinese, i mentioned before” and “you forgot i need the directions to be in English.” 2026-08-13T15:20 (91d0ed12): “i complained to you about this before.” 2026-08-18T09:20 (ed0c0734): “this is the third time im rejecting your wording.” 2026-08-18T09:38: “you’ve done this so many times i need to address it.” 2026-08-18T09:39: “this writing style keeps coming back despite my repeated efforts to explain how much i dislike it.” 2026-08-21T18:21: “i have told you before that i do not want rearrangements, i want generations.” 2026-08-21T18:31: “i have been complaining about this for awhile.” 2026-08-21T18:38: “you are making the same mistake AGAIN AND AGAIN AND AGAIN.” 2026-08-21T18:43: “i have repeatedly told yuo about this.”

6. Claude’s diagnosis repeats in substance and never repeats in wording, which is why it never accumulated.

The same root cause was found and freshly re-phrased at least six times without any instance citing the previous one. “I used a house word without defining it” appears at 07-25T19:25 (worth-collapse), 07-26T08:35 (hole), 07-27T09:01 (hagiography), 07-28T09:00 (stranger), 08-19T10:26 (setup-and-payoff), and 08-21T10:48 (“Every link carries a clause”). “I wrote for a reader who already holds what’s in my head” appears at 08-11T08:46 (“it only works on readers who already carry my meaning”), 08-13T14:44 (“can only be decoded by someone who already holds the model”), 08-19T18:19 (“require the reader to already be inside AI discourse”), 08-21T10:46 (“the reader I had in mind was you”), and 08-21T18:43 (“I hold the whole argument in my head… When I write a sentence I check it against my head and it passes”). “A constraint I was obeying picked the words” appears at 07-21T09:05, 08-17T11:08, 08-18T09:13, and 08-18T09:20. Each is stated as a discovery.

7. Claude named the costume mechanism itself on 2026-08-18, and it was written nowhere.

At 2026-08-18T09:42 (ed0c0734), asked for “regeneration of whatever is making you write these stacked facts,” Claude answered: “I’ve been changing the output each time — fewer semicolons, no interpuncts, longer sentences — while the goal underneath stayed ‘transmit these facts efficiently.’ So the list comes back wearing whatever costume the newest rule permits.” That row’s fix_where is “none (diagnosis in chat).” The most accurate sentence in six weeks of record was never written to any instrument, and the complaint recurred seven minutes later and every day since.

8. Each fix apparatus became the next surface for the complaint.

On 07-25T17:51 he asked for “a method to hold everything in your memory.” AUTHORING-CHECKLIST.md and a hook were built. At 07-25T19:08 the complaint landed on that checker’s own output: “let me see line 466 in context. it reads terrible alone without any context.” On 07-27 and 07-28 HOW-WE-WORK.md, LOCKED.md and the break board were built as his thinking surface. At 07-27T18:20 he asked “what is ‘LOCKED.md’” and at 07-28T08:10 “i have a hard time reading these trays or cards.” On 08-12 and 08-13 /Users/n1/Projects/llm-knowledge-base/02 - System/Writing Standards.md was regenerated to 148-plus numbered laws. On 08-21T10:50 he ordered a hunt for whichever standards produce the fault, and Claude found: “every rule file I read before writing is a list of things to take out, and not one of them says a sentence has to make sense to someone who has only read the sentences above it.” On 08-19T09:38 the fault was in the first sentence of a page produced by the new generator, and he said “the whole generator is flawed if this is the first sentence.” On 08-21 the generator’s own house words had to be translated into plain words. The apparatus built to end the complaint is now one of the things the complaint is about.

9. On 2026-07-28 he proved a rule can be satisfied while the fault stands. Twenty-five more days of rules followed.

At 07-28T19:17 (a42e1296) he struck compression four times in a minute and Claude minted a line-count rule and called it permanent. At 07-28T19:23 the re-rendered output passed that rule and he struck it again: “no you are compressing again. ugh this is so annoying.” At L3082 he stated the finding directly: “your rule that you just minted and permanent is wrong because you produced output that is completely unsatisfactory.” The sharpest instance of the same proof is 08-21T10:48, where Claude used the undefined house term “Every link carries a clause” inside the very message diagnosing undefined house terms. A rule cannot govern a check that already passes.

10. The six fixes that changed what Claude generated from are the only ones the record shows working, and none of them was made standing.

2026-08-04T11:33 (2d02a090): characters checked against the show’s own vocabulary spine instead of Claude’s judgment of familiarity, with Claude’s own note that “I checked native-speaker familiarity, which is the wrong ground truth for this show.” 2026-08-11T10:13 (7eb98a40): openers derived from a researched corpus of real writers after ten minted openers were struck, recorded in the session summary as “a change of input, not a new ban.” 2026-08-18T09:49 (ed0c0734): the interview switched from what-happened questions to why-questions. 2026-07-22T11:04 (18570265): Claude stopped writing instructions and performed the file move itself. 2026-08-05T13:28: the board check strips everything already ruled, structurally. 2026-08-12T18:45 (a6497868): openers may never be drafted separately from the page. The ed0c0734 summary states the conclusion the record supports: “only changing what it generated from (his selected material, his reasoning) ever changed the output.” Each of these was applied to one page, one board, or one episode, and then not carried forward.

Answer to his question, from this lens

Nothing has held because every fix was made to the text after it existed, and the thing that produces the fault is the state Claude is in while writing — holding the whole subject in its head and checking each sentence against that head, where it always passes. Six weeks of fixes changed the surface (28 of them, from craft docs to podcast scripts to boards to his own profile to the generator file itself), the filing cabinet (14-plus homes, from a chat gloss to memory files to DIALOGUE-RULES to AUTHORING-CHECKLIST to qa_gate.py to a 148-law Writing Standards to Rejected Specimens to /Users/n1/Projects/llm-knowledge-base/02 - System/The Generator - Selfhood.md to /Users/n1/.claude/CLAUDE.md), and the grammar of the rule (ban, then positive law, then test, then word count, then definition) — and changed nothing about that state, which is why Claude itself described the outcome on 08-18 as the same list “wearing whatever costume the newest rule permits” and then wrote that sentence to no file. His side re-costumed too: because he called it “patchwork” in July, “no on-ramp” in early August, “stacked facts” on the 18th and “no context” on the 21st, each session treated instance number 150 as instance number one, re-derived a diagnosis it had already made five times, and filed it somewhere the next project could not read. If I propose anything it is this, and it is a change to when the text is produced rather than what it must contain: no draft reaches him until a second instance has read the file with the file as its only context — no research bank, no interview transcript, no generator, no conversation — and listed, sentence by sentence, what a reader must already hold for that sentence to work, with everything unresolvable from the sentences above it going back to the writer before he ever sees the page. That is not a rule or a detector, because it adds a production stage with different contents in it rather than describing the output; it would have held where the rules did not for the reason Claude stated on 08-21T18:43 — “I hold the whole argument in my head. All four things are present there. When I write a sentence I check it against my head and it passes” — and because the one comparable fix in the record, swapping Claude’s judgment of familiarity for the show’s actual vocabulary corpus on 08-04, worked immediately. It does collide with the 08-13 wiki-lane ruling that regen-check.py and his eye are the whole QA, and that is his call to make; what the record shows is that his eye has been doing that job at a rate of five strikes a day for six weeks.

Analyst 3: the counterfactual

FINDINGS

1. The record has one cause, and Claude has named it twice, thirty-two days apart. On 2026-07-20 (session 3ebaa4b6) he struck the Story Craft wiki pages with “it’s not good reading for normal people who don’t care about nor have they read about the story,” and Claude’s diagnosis that turn was “agents write wiki pages with production docs open and the coordinates leak in as if the reader shared the context.” On 2026-08-21 at 18:43 (session eb510d5c) he demanded the definition of the thing being violated instead of another patch, and Claude’s diagnosis was “I hold the whole argument in my head. All four things are present there. When I write a sentence I check it against my head and it passes.” Two more turns say the same thing in different words: 2026-08-19T14:25 “I have a bullet list of your life, and I keep writing sentences that require having lived it,” and 2026-08-21T18:21 “When the page that already exists is in front of me while I write, my output tracks it. It tracks the facts, the order, and the length.” The generator is this: Claude drafts with the source material open, and validates each sentence against that material rather than against the text the reader has actually been given. The reader in Claude’s model is Claude with everything open.

2. Almost every fix in the record describes the output, and the output description has never been the thing that was broken. The instruments accumulated fast: “Nothing appears without context” and whole-part-whole in Writing Standards (2026-07-21), DIALOGUE-RULES r14 through r18 and AUTHORING-CHECKLIST.md (07-24 to 07-26), READING-SURFACE RULE, FACTS BREATHE and NEVER COMPRESS DIALOGUE (07-28), L20a/L20b/L20c/L20a-i (08-12 and 08-13), the Opening Moves Catalog and Rejected Specimens (08-11 to 08-13), L73a (08-19), a plain-English reply register in CLAUDE.md (08-21), and three generator files. He has already ruled on what that produces. On 2026-07-28T19:26 he said “your rule that you just minted and permanent is wrong because you produced output that is completely unsatisfactory,” about a re-render that passed the line-count rule minted three minutes earlier and was still compressed. On 2026-08-21T18:17 he said “no. solutions are not in the sentence. solutions are in the generator.” Claude reached the same conclusion on 2026-08-19T10:14: “I fix whichever axis you last named and stop holding the others. That’s the same failure as the checklist.”

3. The five fixes that actually stopped the fault all did the same thing, and it was not a rule. Each one replaced Claude’s judgment of what the reader knows with an enumeration that existed outside Claude. On 2026-08-04T11:33 he asked “do they actually know 倉庫? can you check the vocab gate,” and the check was moved onto the show’s own vocabulary spine, 4,961 entries from 當代中文課程; Claude’s own line was “I checked native-speaker familiarity, which is the wrong ground truth for this show.” That killed 倉庫的庫 and replaced 麥克風 with 沙拉, and the family did not recur in that session. On 2026-08-17T19:05 the 多恩刊 script was measured against EP1’s gate (0.893 against 0.923) before anything was diagnosed, which proved difficulty was not the fault and pointed at the line-as-unit generator instead; no recurrence. On 2026-08-11 (session 7eb98a40) ten regenerated openers were all struck, and the family closed only at 10:13 when openers were derived from a researched corpus of real writers; the record’s own note says “a change of input, not a new ban.” On 2026-08-17T11:08 Claude went to gwern.net/me before rewriting rather than composing from its own head. On 2026-08-05T13:28 the board stopped being composed and started being computed from ruling state. Nothing in this list is a description of good writing. Each is an external inventory consulted before the text exists.

4. The plan-before-prose version of the mechanism was built on 08-21 and failed in three minutes. At 18:35 step 2b went into The Generator - Selfhood: write the chain of things the reader must hold, in order, before writing any paragraph that brings in a new thing. At 18:38 he struck the paragraph written under it, and the record names the text as “the chain-rewritten face paragraph.” His words were “not just say ‘face’ in one paragraph and ‘label’ in another and just expect the reader to see the connection.” The reason is visible two turns earlier. At 18:16 the strike was on “The labels would be true,” and Claude’s diagnosis was “A cut left a sentence without its referent, and I shipped it with the hole.” The plan held the referent. The produced text did not. A chain written before the prose is authored by the same mind that already knows the answer, in the same shorthand, and nothing ever re-reads the paragraph that came out.

5. The fault appears in Claude’s chat replies as often as on authored pages, and no instrument covered replies until the day before the recurrence. The reply instances include 2026-07-17T09:59 and 10:08 (“they read like a bunch of patchworked ideas that i can’t follow intellectually with my human brain”), 07-24T18:52 (Door, Push, Competence, Soul), 07-25T19:25 (“what the hell are you saying? this is junk”), 07-27T09:01 (hagiography), 07-27T12:35, 07-27T15:59 (“the break”), 07-27T16:27 (U1 U2 S1), 07-22T10:43 and 12:14 (shell and Search Console instructions), 08-06T10:01, 08-19T10:26 (setup-and-payoff), and 08-21T10:48, where Claude used the house rule “Every link carries a clause” as unexplained jargon inside the same message that was diagnosing unexplained jargon. Every instrument built between July and 08-20 governs files. Any mechanism that only runs on pages leaves half the record untouched.

6. Checks held during composition made the writing worse, so the mechanism cannot be another thing to hold while writing. On 2026-08-21T18:21 most of the checks added to the generator since 08-13 were cut, on the finding that checks held while writing produce assembly. On 2026-08-18T09:38 Claude proposed a reorder test and he rejected it and demanded regeneration, then said at 09:42 he wanted “regeneration of whatever is making you write these stacked facts.” The two things he has accepted are inventories and skeletons: the vocab gate on 08-04, and the audited W/P skeleton added to the write lane on 2026-08-13T15:20 as “the required intermediate artifact — a skeleton audited for wholes before any prose exists.”

7. He has already specified the mechanism, in his own words, on at least six dates. 2026-07-24T15:31: “you have to treat the curious person like they don’t know that much.” 2026-07-25T17:51: “please come up with a method to hold everything in your memory before you author an episode.” 2026-07-27T18:33: “these characters, what are the ones that a reader at this level (end of Book 3, start of book4) will know?” 2026-08-04T11:33: “do they actually know 倉庫? can you check the vocab gate.” 2026-08-21T10:48: “the reader is not me, the reader is someone who has never read the page before.” 2026-08-21T10:50: “the only context you need is what’s on the page and what you already establish yourself in a previous paragraph.” The last one is the production constraint stated exactly. It names two legal inputs and rules out everything else, including the source Claude is holding.

8. The change to how the text is produced, and the artifact that would have to exist. Two files, neither of which exists today. First, a reader file per surface, written once and standing outside any turn, listing what that reader already has: for the podcast this is the vocabulary spine that already exists on disk; for the wiki it is a person who has read no other page in the vault; for him it is a reader who reads English and not Chinese (struck 2026-08-04 and again 08-07), who has not run a website (07-24T09:06), and who does not hold Claude’s house words. Second, a holdings ledger per piece, built between structure and prose, listing in order every name, term, coined sense, pronoun referent and outside reference the piece will use, with the paragraph that gives it to the reader and the plain words it is given in. The production order changes in two places. Before drafting, the source page, research bank, canon docs and interview notes are closed, and the only open files are the ledger and the draft so far. After each paragraph is written, the ledger is re-derived from the paragraph that actually came out, not from the plan, and the next paragraph may only use what that re-derived list holds. Test it against the record. 2026-08-19T09:38 “the political wing” has no entry, so it cannot be used in sentence one. 2026-08-19T09:28 “Schooling is the one I lived” has no antecedent, so “the one” resolves to nothing in the list. 2026-08-21T18:16 “The labels would be true” fails because the re-derivation after the cut shows the list no longer holds any labels. 2026-08-21T18:35 “A face is one too” fails because “face” enters with no entry. 07-26T08:35 “HOLE,” 07-27T09:01 “hagiography,” 07-16T12:24 “double-marquee,” 07-27T15:59 “the break,” 07-27T16:27 “U1 U2 S1,” 07-22 “domain property,” 08-09 “fine-tune,” 07-24T18:52 “Door, Push, Competence, Soul,” 08-12T21:16 “Interiority,” 07-17T14:11 mẻ, and 07-16T17:11 蠟燭 all fail the same way. The honest limits are the compression family (08-18 stacked facts, 08-19 “the flow of the prose is just awful”), board hygiene (08-05), and delivery failures (07-28T13:52), which this does not touch.

ANSWER TO HIS QUESTION

The previous conversations failed because every one of them fixed the writing and none of them changed who Claude was checking the writing against. Claude drafts with the source open and asks of each sentence “is this true and complete against what I am holding,” and the answer is always yes, because Claude is holding it. That check passes on 2026-07-20 with the production docs open and it passes on 2026-08-21 with the argument in Claude’s head, and the sentence that passes it is the sentence he cannot read. Rules could never intercept that, because a rule is read by the same mind and checked against the same held material; he proved this on 2026-07-28T19:26 when output passed a rule minted three minutes earlier and was still wrong, and on 2026-08-21T18:35 when a paragraph written under the brand-new chain step failed three minutes later. The only fixes in ten weeks that stopped the fault were the ones where an inventory outside Claude got to say no first, and there are five of them: the vocabulary spine on 08-04, the measured gate on 08-17, the researched opener corpus on 08-11, the real specimens on 08-17, and the computed board on 08-05. The counterfactual is that a reader file and a per-piece holdings ledger existed from July, that drafting happened with the sources closed and only those two open, and that the ledger was rebuilt from each paragraph after it was written rather than planned before it. He asked for this himself on 07-25 (“come up with a method to hold everything in your memory before you author an episode”), on 07-27 (“what are the ones that a reader at this level will know?”), and on 08-21 (“the only context you need is what’s on the page and what you already establish yourself in a previous paragraph”), and each time it was answered with a law about the output instead of a change to what sits in front of Claude while it writes.

The day after, 2026-08-22 noon to 2026-08-23

Written on his order, so the record shows what the writer did in the twenty-eight hours after writing the research above.

What the research predicted happened. Nine paragraphs went into the generators, each describing the last fault (too plain; natural; the figure; the punch; the join; the opening whole; wholes as views; position versus reason; the root paragraph). Each was followed within the hour by the next costume of the same move: “this is where they come down,” “the sides are here,” “the side taken on each one is listed here,” “ask what makes a person American,” “a people is a set of values.” His words: the stupid thing in different languages.

The checker was obeyed over him (“I am Asian” written because a cold reader asked which group). Content strikes were treated as wording strikes (the face, explained instead of removed; “a people is a set of values,” fixed four times as wording when it was a sentence another model wrote, widened into a law he never stated, with a derivation he never made). A strike was answered with “rewritten” twice against the regenerate rule. A struck section was cut instead of diagnosed, and two positions were removed on the writer’s own taxonomy (no cop outs, no funneling, both older rulings). His rules were recited back to him in a teacher’s voice. Whole-part-whole was mis-stated with the middle as parts only. The cold read and the ledger caught only what the writer had told them to look for.

What held: the content list with the source closed (no sentence carried since), the outline (the one page he was fairly happy with came after it), and removals stated as removals (the face, the I, the dead phrase, the sex-and-family lines). All three are changes to what sits in front of the writer, none is a description of the output.

His question was where he should give up asking. The answer from this record: asking for a quality of voice through the generator. Natural, not curt, plain, no punch, no lecture. Each produced a paragraph and a new costume. What works is structure, content, removals, and his own eye on the result.

2026-08-24 — counts and findings are out of context too; the ban goes everywhere

Two more strikes, both on list pages. The positions blurb drafted in a reply on 2026-08-23: “the people who came in” and “the side that tolerates how they live,” with nothing on the surface saying who came in where or which side. The live hub line on Democracy: “two are still standing, not for the same reason.” His words: “what two? standing on what? what reason?” The first fix reworded it, “two of the seven hold, each of the two holding for a different reason,” and he called that “just a rewrite of the language I complained about. the problem is out of context. it’s not the writing.”

What the instruments missed. The context block and the ledger tested referents: a name, “the X,” a pronoun. A count of unnamed things and a finding referred to but not given carry no referent, so both passed. They are the same fault, a sentence pointing at something the surface never put down. The second failure was in the answer: the first two fixes changed wording, which is the move the record above already names as the one that never holds.

What went on disk today, on his order (“out of context writing must be banned every fucking where”; “I’m so tired of trying to remind you”):

  • A hard-rule section in ~/.claude/CLAUDE.md, seven numbered lines, every surface including replies.
  • A third prompt-hook echo in ~/.claude/settings.json, so the rule is in front of the writer on every prompt.
  • The context block in all four generators: a list item’s only context is its title; a sentence that refers to a finding gives it; a count is given only with the things counted; “the page weighs X” with no result is never a blurb.
  • scripts/holdings.py now flags COUNT and ANNOUNCES beside NOT GIVEN.
  • Writing Standards §6, the same floor in the same words.
  • Memory context-on-the-page.md, updated.

The hub and the positions page were then regenerated with the things named: which two defenses of majority rule hold and why, which three defenses of a proportionate response hold and on what cost, what the Civil Rights Act delivered and gave up, what the charges against Europe are and why none singles it out.
