Who they are
A calm woman in her early fifties who runs the Mandarin classroom at the Taipei language centre where the students land, and meets them at the intake desk before any of them has a seat. She holds the room with warm, unhurried authority: every new arrival’s name is down by the end of the first day, and the Chinese name on the intake card comes off her pen — 白龍’s too-grand one is hers, and when 沈文’s homemade robot needed a name, she gave that too.
In class she herds without pushing — the drifting ones pulled back by name, homework marked in red without a sting, 「慢慢來，不要急。」 to anyone panicking over their tones. Her real move is the question: she lets a conversation circle the thing nobody wants to say, drops half a beat slower, asks it plainly in one line, then simply waits for the answer. First in, last out, the room fed.
Personality
Warm, patient and steady — the teacher who slows a room down instead of speeding it up. She notices who has gone quiet and draws them back by name. Her humour is gentle and lightly teasing, the kindly wry aside that lifts the room and never lands on a student. She pours into everyone in front of her and asks nothing back, and she is strong enough to be entirely gentle: she never raises her voice and never needs to.
Look
Early fifties, medium height, composed posture; warm light-tan skin, a soft round face with gentle laugh-lines and a small easy smile; dark hair threaded with silver at the temples, gathered in a neat low bun with a loose strand or two. A warm-cream blouse and slate skirt beneath the cardigan, comfortable flat shoes, a slim simple pendant — and no glasses.
