Cognitive Load & What Mental Effort Is Trying to Cue
Cognitive load is mental effort used as a pointer to the work the mind is holding, resolving, comparing, or transforming. Too little of this effort and too much of it are different problems. The next move depends on which kind of hard is on the table.
Reading the signal
The feeling arrives before any diagnosis. Drowsiness while the page is still in view is one state. Confusion that will not resolve while several factors stay in the head at once is another. A session that is working, and is tiring because it is working, is a third. Treating all three as “hard” or “easy” collapses the pointer.

The low-effort row is the one that looks like rest and is not. Yawning, rereading the same paragraph, or switching tabs without a reason are the usual tells: the mind is receiving, not transforming. Teaching, mapping, questioning, or comparing raises the load because work has started.
The high-effort row splits on whether anything is moving. Progress means the comparisons are landing and the map is changing. That load is the encoding. Fatigue still has to be watched, because productive work still costs. Confusion without progress is a different reading. The usual cause is knowing that several pieces relate without knowing how they relate, so all of them stay in working memory at once. The matching moves are a pause, a narrower scope, the pieces out on paper, and the concerns that were being resolved together taken apart.
Overwhelm is the state where too much is on the table to pick a next move. It is a triage cue, not a verdict that the tank is too small. First Principles of Learning owns the move: make the pile explicit, turn it into a question, let the question organise what happens next. This page only names the signal.
Stuckness that repeats after those moves have been tried is usually the method, not the material. The angle or the practice condition is what changes.
What kind of hard
The key question is not whether the work is hard. It is what kind of hard this is. Hard because two ideas have to be compared and judged is the productive range. Hard because too many interacting factors are being held at once is overload, and the work stops until the pile is smaller. Easy because the session is coasting is the low-effort row again: the depth has to rise.
Efficient learning keeps load in a productive band — high enough that processing is actually happening, low enough that the workbench is not jammed. Overload is a biological limit on how many pieces can be resolved internally at once, not a discipline failure. High load during genuine higher-order thinking is a feature, as long as it is not tipping into the confusion row. Relational work raises how many elements interact, so it feels different, uncomfortable, and confusing at first. The table fails in both directions when the discriminator is dropped. Labelling every hard session productive turns high effort into permission to continue a jammed pile. Labelling every hard session overload turns useful comparison into an exit. Progress versus confusion is the cut. The bound on the feature reading is the same cut.
When the same work gets cheaper
Working memory is a small workbench. Current estimates put the focus of attention nearer four items than the older seven. Trying to resolve many interacting factors on that bench is what produces the confusion row. Six responses sit on the bench without cutting the work that belongs there: separating concerns, mapping dependencies, thinking on paper, pausing consumption, handling a piece before the next one arrives, and narrowing the question. Thinking on Paper is the offload that gets the interacting factors out of the head. Memory Handling is what to do inside the short window once a piece is on the bench.
The same process can feel cheaper later without the bench getting larger. Cognitive load tolerance is that cheaper feeling: the pieces have compiled, or they have somewhere to sit, so the same relational work no longer has to be assembled from scratch. Schema automation is the mechanism. Enduring overload does not grow the tank. Sitting in the confusion row as training is the reading this clause is there to stop.
Offload can cut the extra hold without cutting the productive work. Non-linear notes, mini hypothetical maps, and short consolidation pauses — a summary before more is taken in — keep the comparisons and drop the pile. A new technique consumes load of its own, independent of the content it was meant to help. Two new techniques at once spend the bandwidth the techniques were supposed to free. The planning rule here is one or two new techniques at a time, until they have compiled enough to stop competing with the material.

The next move follows the kind
The next move is chosen by the kind of hard just named. A low-effort hour wants transformation. A high-effort hour with progress wants continuation and a watch on fatigue. A high-effort hour with confusion wants a smaller pile. Overwhelm wants the biggest constraint named first. Repeated stuckness wants a different angle. The cheaper feeling later is compilation, not toughness.
