The Accretion Frame

The accretion frame is the design theory of the pull engine, the practice that produces its own return visits. A long practice runs on push or on pull: force against a headwind, or a structure that makes the next visit arrive on its own. Wanting follows from structure.

Pull holds when three conditions sit together. The practice grows a persistent artifact. It leaves a next piece visibly unfinished. A missed day costs nothing. Under those conditions the return visit does not have to be forced.

What a maintenance metric does

Push has its own toolkit — defusion, willpower budgeting, environment design — the tooling of Self-Regulation and Self-Management. This frame is designed not to spend that toolkit every day.

A streak or a closed ring counts days in a row against a daily requirement. The number is only valuable while it is unbroken, which makes it a fragility counter. After the chain exists, the day’s decision flips from adding a piece to protecting a possession.

Keeping the chain feels good at first and then less so. Breaking it keeps hurting. Over a long enough run the metric is mostly downside. Anything short of the daily requirement counts as nothing. After one miss, another miss costs almost nothing extra — the same collapse documented when a diet rule is broken, and a fair reading of what a streak does. Products ship freeze buttons because a broken chain is a known reason people quit.

Counting is not free. Six experiments on enjoyable activities found that tracking raised how much got done, cut how much it was enjoyed, and cut how much of it happened later. That corrosion is for leisure. Goal-directed output is mostly spared. A daily requirement also tells time wrong for a body. Capacity accrues across weeks and needs rest to do it. Scoring a rest day as a failure scores correct training as a failure.

What pull is made of

Subtract pieces and watch what dies. Take away the thing that accumulates and the desire to return dies. Take away surprise — every session now the same — and it dies. Take away the quota and nothing happens. Take away the other people and starts get slower; the pull remains. Two parts carry the load: a thing that only grows, and a next addition whose result is not known in advance.

Those two are one property in practice. The next addition is visible and its outcome is open. A ring displays a closed gap. A street map with unwalked blocks displays an open one. Regret on a skipped day that needs no app is a picture of a deposit that did not happen.

The maintenance literature sits on the same side of the argument without being this three-part design. Motives of enjoyment, competence, and belonging predict staying. Motives of health, weight, and looks predict a start that later stops. The feeling inside one session predicts how much activity is still happening half a year and a year later. That feeling ranks with the artifact, not below it. An eight-week trial that set intensity by pleasure rather than by fitness numbers got 77 percent more attendance — 14.35 sessions against 8.13, forty-six people retained, a small trial. The lever was how the hour felt while it was going on.

Willpower imagined as a muscle that runs out has mostly failed to replicate. It is a discarded rival, not a live alternative this page has to steelman.

Climbing, skating, dance, and martial arts already run on skill as a tree that does not empty, with the scene holding the structure. Autotelic is their word: the activity is its own reason.

The clocks a body actually keeps

The body keeps more than one clock. The slow ones survive a gap. A motor skill lasts years. Tendon and connective tissue rebuild on a scale of months. Bone turns over in a cycle of three to four months. Muscle that has been trained before comes back much faster than a first-time build.

The fast ones are weather. Stored carbohydrate, plasma volume, mitochondrial enzymes, the mood lift after a session — real, useful, gone if they are not restocked.

One skipped day cannot take anything structural. A skipped week is often even, or better, because tiredness leaves faster than capacity does. Mood, insulin response, and metabolic sharpness want a rhythm well below daily: hard breathing inside a loose two-or-three-day window.

The portable check is simple. After a month completely off, does the number still mean anything? Unlocked skills, total distance, dated bests, named routes still mean something. Day-chains, closed rings, calories burned do not.

Design rules

Seven rules. Each one blocks a relapse that has a name.

Because tracking eats leisure and mostly leaves goal-directed work alone, the number belongs on the collection, not on the hour itself. In a study of more than sixty thousand gym-goers, the arm that worked hardest paid a few cents for showing up again after a skip — about nine cents, a 27 percent lift in visits. One skipped day does not undo the automaticity already built. The line that often gets quoted as a sixty-six-day clock is the wrong line from the same paper.

The start of a session stays small: sets below a maximum, scraps of movement, a first action too slight to need a decision. Pairing the hour with something already wanted raised gym attendance 51 percent in its field trial. That figure is the opening lift. It faded. It is not a permanent 51 percent.

Showing up on schedule is mostly a property of the surroundings. People who look disciplined are usually people whose defaults already decide. About 45 percent of what a day contains happens again in the same setting. A standing time, place, class, or partner is a container that can absorb a gap: one miss is nothing, and coming back is the default.

What the frame does not rescue

A day-chain does give cheap structure, and it holds while the activity still fits who the person is. The collapse after a break is also real. Both are true. This page does not say throw the chain away.

Pleasure during movement falls off once conversation becomes hard — past the ventilatory threshold, with the talk-test as the field version. Intensity someone else imposed is what gets abandoned. Nothing that accumulates will save a session that feels bad while it is happening. Speed stays chosen by the person doing it. The session stops while it still feels good, because the memory of that feeling is what forecasts the next one.

Scenes that live on pull still require a hard stretch. The plateau lasts. The struggle comes before the flow. The design buys an easy arrival. It has never bought easy work.

Two checks. Three weeks in, a skipped day should produce a specific picture of a pile that did not grow. If it produces nothing, the pile is decoration. A planned week off sorts the rest: “the pile paused” means the design is holding; “behind schedule” means a rate crept in. Delete the denominator.

Push tooling stays for domains where nothing accretes, and for cold starts inside converted ones. DFUZ is a one-session move that unhooks from the feeling of not wanting to start, so a stalled practice can restart. It is a reserve, never the daily motor. The price of the frame is design work. The first live conversion is Movement as Accretion; The Treadmill Library is the listening arm of that conversion. The working name for a movement practice that never invokes the motivation machinery is motivationless movement. It is a name, not a slogan to argue.

Wanting still follows from structure. The structure has to include how the session feels, and it has to leave rest unpunished. What the design buys is effortless showing up. It has never bought effortless doing.
