Encoding and Retrieval

A better first pass at the material means fewer later pulls from memory, and the later pulls never reach zero. Forgetting keeps running, so a later pull stays on the calendar. Encoding and retrieval stay split because taking material in well and pulling it back out well are different actions, even though intake and access change each other.

Two channels

Encoding is the first-pass work of getting material into a shape that can later be rebuilt. Retrieval is using that material from memory — recalling, explaining, solving, teaching — before the source is checked. They are not rival techniques. Treating them as a balance is what decides how study time gets spent as skill changes.

That never-zero floor has two channels. One is intake: the first pass was thin, so there is little there to rebuild. The other is access: the first pass was adequate, and the path back has gone. Material taken in as a network of relations, not a list of isolated facts, decays more slowly on the intake channel, so later pulls come less often. The access channel decays with time regardless of how good the intake was. That is why a first pass, however good, never deletes retrieval.

Retrieval is not only a check on the first pass. Pulling material from memory modifies the memory. A later pull is also a new encoding event.

This week’s spend

While encoding skill is still weak, the week leans on retrieval. Encoding skill is slow to build and slower to judge from the inside; retrieval pays in days — even a thin first pass, tested rather than restudied, shows on a delayed test inside that window. The habit to install first is interleaved retrieval, on the encoding already in hand. A new encoding method is a later week’s work. Starting both families in the same week is technique overload: two new method-families, competence in neither.

That habit is also the scaffold that installs regular spacing, and mixing topics while retrieving forces Higher Order Learning, which later makes a new encoding method easier to pick up. That is a reason to start there, not a finding that interleaving teaches encoding skill.

While encoding is still weak, retrieval carries the week.

The early phase costs many sessions, many gaps, and a lot of time. That is the expected state while the first pass is still weak. Each pass both reduces what has decayed and re-encodes the material, so the next pass covers more ground in less time — a month of material does not cost a month of revisiting. The load is supposed to fall.

Seeing the thin first pass lands as conscious incompetence: the dip when the miss becomes visible. It is not the overconfidence finding, which describes people who cannot yet see the miss. Awareness is the start of the repair, not the failure.

A rhythm of one day, one week, and one month is a workload default. A kept rhythm beats no rhythm; the useful gap still scales with how long the memory has to last. While encoding is weak the schedule holds the material; looseness is a privilege better encoding later buys. A same-day pass is encoding support, not the first real test. The standing system is Spaced Interleaved Retrieval; the formats sit in the Interleaving Table. After a few days of interleaved retrieval the gaps should be visible, even if encoding still feels confused.

The later pulls get cheaper as the first pass improves. They do not vanish. What runs this week is the retrieval habit, on the encoding already in hand. The early cost is a starting tax. Better intake later buys looseness, not a memory that no longer needs pulling.
