Encoding and Retrieval
Encoding and retrieval are two sides of one coin: the better you encode, the less you need to retrieve — but you never reach zero, because no memory is leak-proof. Treating them as a balance, rather than as rival techniques, decides how to spend study time at each stage of skill.
The trade-off
- Better encoding → less forgetting → less retrieval needed. High-quality, networked encoding decays slowly.
- Retrieval never goes to zero. Some decay is always present, so some retrieval is always required.
- Encoding skill is slow to build; retrieval pays off fast. Early on, retrieval carries the system — it addresses decay immediately even while encoding is still weak.
Sequencing: retrieval before encoding techniques
Before formal encoding techniques (taught later), the right move is to build interleaved retrieval first and otherwise just try your best with the encoding you already have. The reasons:
- Retrieval shows results in days; encoding can take weeks before a learner can even judge their own improvement.
- Interleaving forces higher-order learning anyway, which makes the later encoding techniques easier to learn.
- Doing both at once risks technique overload — failing to gain competence in either.
When retrieval feels ineffective
- The early phase legitimately involves many retrieval sessions, many gaps, and high time cost — that’s normal while encoding is weak.
- Discovering how much you’d been doing wrong drops confidence sharply — the conscious-incompetence dip on the Dunning–Kruger curve. Unlike most learners, once aware of the limitation you can actually grow past it.
Spacing
Spacing does not need to be ultra-strict. A simple rhythm (e.g. 1 day / 1 week / 1 month) is enough for most; precision matters less than consistency. See Spaced Interleaved Retrieval and the Interleaving Table for the fuller method.
