The Role of Speech in the Regulation of Normal and Abnormal Behaviour — Alexander R. Luria (1961) [neurology] MECHANISM: Luria took Vygotsky’s claim into the lab and the clinic, using speech-motor experiments with children and patients with frontal-lobe damage to test whether words actually control action. He found that speech first acquires an impelling function — a verbal command or self-command can initiate a movement — and only later a directive (regulatory) function that can also inhibit and steer it. In young children and in patients with frontal pathology, the impelling function survives while the directive function fails: the word triggers action but cannot stop it. This is the ‘discipline of assent’ — the claim that the impression arrives involuntarily but the assent to it does not, and the assent is the only place with leverage. Discourses 4.12 supplies the enabling condition: prosoche, uninterrupted attention to one’s own mental activity, which Epictetus argues is as continuously required as the attention of a musician or a helmsman. The Principles of Psychology, Vol. 1, Ch. IV: ‘Habit’ — William James (1890) [life-shaping] MECHANISM: James argued that nervous tissue possesses plasticity — ‘a structure weak enough to yield to an influence, but strong enough not to yield all at once’ — so that every repeated act deepens a physical channel and no repetition is ever fully erased. He drew the moral consequence hard: character is the accumulated residue of repetitions, and small acts compound into fate. He then gave explicit prescriptions for installing a habit. This is argument and observation, not measurement: James had no neuroscience behind the plasticity claim, and his chapter is the historical headwater of modern ‘rewire your brain’ rhetoric — which means it should be read as the origin of the claim, not as evidence for it. SPECIFIC: The three maxims: launch with as strong and decided an initiative as possible; never suffer an exception to occur until the habit is rooted; seize the very first opportunity to act on every resolution. Plus the framing goal — ‘make our nervous system our ally instead of our enemy.’ KEY LINE: We are spinning our own fates, good or evil, and never to be undone. GOAL: It is the best single statement of the life-shaping thesis the researcher wants examined — repeated inner acts accumulate into a person — and simultaneously the place to mark where the pop ‘rewiring’ story actually comes from. For a KB page, citing James lets the argument be made in its strongest form while making explicit that it is a nineteenth-century inference, so later chapters can sort which parts modern evidence supports.

Cognitive Therapy and the Emotional Disorders — Aaron T. Beck (1976) [practice] MECHANISM: Beck’s clinical observation was that between an event and an emotional reaction sits a stream of rapid, unbidden, usually unnoticed self-statements — ‘automatic thoughts’ — which patients could learn to catch and report. His therapeutic move was to shift the patient’s relationship to those thoughts before arguing with their content: patients are trained in distancing, which Beck defined as dealing with a thought objectively and evaluating it rather than blindly accepting it, i.e. recognizing a thought as a subjective interpretation rather than an objective fact. Abnormal Psychology 77:115–126) — Donald Meichenbaum (and Joseph Goodman) (1977 (book); 1971 (study)) [practice] MECHANISM: Meichenbaum took Vygotsky’s and Luria’s developmental claim and turned it into a training protocol, on the premise that self-statements affect behavior much as another person’s statements would. With impulsive children, he and Goodman ran a five-step fading ladder that reverses the internalization sequence deliberately: an adult performs the task while speaking self-instructions aloud (cognitive modeling); the child performs it under the adult’s spoken instruction (overt external guidance); the child performs it while instructing himself aloud (overt self-guidance); the child whispers the instructions (faded overt self-guidance); the child performs it under silent inner speech (covert self-instruction). The honest caveat is in the follow-up literature: reviewers including Diaz and colleagues (1990) argued that self-instructional training’s effects typically do not generalize widely beyond the trained tasks and situations. Telling More Than We Can Know: Verbal Reports on Mental Processes (Psychological Review, 84, 231–259) — Richard E. Nisbett & Timothy D. Wilson (1977) [against] MECHANISM: Reviewing a wide body of experiments, Nisbett and Wilson concluded there may be little or no direct introspective access to higher-order cognitive processes. Subjects were repeatedly unaware that a stimulus had influenced their response — sometimes unaware of the stimulus, sometimes of the response, sometimes of the connection — yet produced confident explanations anyway. Those explanations, the authors argued, are not introspective readouts but inferences from a priori implicit causal theories about which causes are plausible. The paper is one of the most-cited in psychology, with over 13,000 citations. SPECIFIC: The confabulation result: verbal reports about one’s own mental causes are generated by plausibility-based theorizing, not by observation of the process. Accuracy of self-report tracks the plausibility of the theory, not access to the mechanism. GOAL: It sets the honest ceiling on the whole practice: you can catch that a self-statement occurred, but your account of why it occurred and what it caused is a guess dressed as a memory. That argues for logging the observable — situation, exact wording, what you then did — rather than trusting introspective explanations, and it explains why the practice needs external checks.

Reason and Emotion in Psychotherapy — Albert Ellis (1962 (rev. 1994)) [against] MECHANISM: Ellis’s foundational claim is that thinking and emoting largely take the form of self-talk — internalized sentences — and that the sentences a person keeps repeating become their emotions; his ABC model separates the activating event (A) from the belief (B) from the emotional consequence (C), locating the leverage entirely at B via disputation (D). From that same premise he attacked the positive-thinking tradition directly, calling Norman Vincent Peale’s approach unrealistic and liable to boomerang, and comparing Peale’s techniques to Émile Coué’s autosuggestion. REBT’s stated goal, developed across Ellis’s corpus, is to convert unhealthy negative emotions (depression, rage, guilt, shame) into healthy negative ones (sadness, annoyance, remorse, regret) — not to replace negative self-talk with positive self-talk. Ellis extended this to self-esteem itself: praising the self and condemning the self both rest on global self-rating, so unconditional self-acceptance replaces both.
