30-Day Challenge - Deep Processing
The Deep Processing Challenge is a four-week practice plan for catching the moment something only feels familiar, then raising the demand on that same catch each week. The move under the month is what the material means, how it connects to other ideas, and why it matters.
Week 1 — Moving Beyond Recognition
The first week does nothing but make the mode visible. Deep processing, on this track, is encoding that relates an idea to other ideas and to why it matters, instead of stopping at the familiar feeling. Isolated thinking remembers and understands an item without comparing it to anything. It feels easy, and it often makes you drowsy. Connected thinking compares, then judges which comparisons matter, and it costs effort. That feeling is the instrument. It is what makes the catch possible.

The week’s product is a tally: a mark on paper beside the work, one per catch, for the whole session. Every half hour the session pauses, and the pause is spent rebuilding a big-picture view of everything covered so far. The rebuild, not the pause, is what stops the session drifting isolated. A written reflection closes the session. A year’s habit of isolated reading is not erased in a week. Awareness is the buy. Upgrading after the fact is weaker than processing deeply on the first pass: gaps and thin retention survive the upgrade. What falls over the following weeks is the proportion of session time spent isolated. Relating does not wait for understanding to finish. Some item-specific encoding still earns its place.
Week 2 — Building Relationships
With the mode visible, the second week puts a demand on it. Connections get hunted as relationships, contrasts, implications, and dependencies, rather than ideas held in isolation. Every fifteen minutes, five go to comparing what was just covered — similarities, differences, trends, influences. Every hour, fifteen go to the same pass over the whole topic so far. Three such cycles fill an hour: forty-five minutes covering and fifteen relating, plus the hourly fifteen. A seventy-five-minute block therefore yields forty-five minutes of new coverage, about two-fifths of desk time spent relating rather than advancing. Those intervals are this system’s defaults, not a measured law.
The connections get recorded, not just thought. An item held in a network is retained more strongly and understood more deeply, and each further item is easier to place. An unclear relationship gets one or two minutes of looking up, then the session moves on. Overwhelm means more links are being found than can be held. That is the expected reading, not a fault. Difficulty here comes from hunting for relationships in general; naming those four targets is what makes them findable. A desk prompt reading “how are these similar?” is enough of an anchor.
The ladder
The move never changes and the demand does. Notice the mode, relate on a clock, rank what the relating produced, then run it unprompted. The four weeks are graded because the processing cannot be micromanaged at speed. The parts are practised separately, then combined, and only an automatic version survives a real session. Every week ends its sessions with a written reflection. The attempt is wasted without it. Higher-effort encoding feels slower inside the session; the buy is less repetition later and more flexible use of what was learned. That is the price the second week’s arithmetic just showed: about two-fifths of desk time going to relating, less new coverage in the hour. Any material will do: next term’s reading, an old weak topic, a list built from public encyclopaedia articles. The skill is the point.
Week 3 — Testing Depth Through Explanation
The third week raises the standard from finding links to weighing them. Each new relationship gets a value out of five for how much it matters to the wider topic. Ranking is a level above finding, and it is the fix for the second week’s overwhelm: a maze is easier once the main path is marked. When a score will not settle, the concept is explained at more than one level of abstraction, as if to someone with different background knowledge. Where that explanation breaks is the gap the score was hiding.
Three minutes to look further, then the number gets assigned anyway. Full certainty is unavailable and the time to chase it is unrealistic. The aim is the most certainty obtainable inside the cap. Scoring makes previously obvious links feel uncertain, and that uncertainty is the work.
The uncertainty scoring produces is the work rather than a sign of doing it wrong.
This is usually the hardest week. Gaps become obvious, links that felt straightforward turn uncertain, and settling a score often means reading further than the week’s own material.

Week 4 — Re-Processing Shallow Material
The last week stops scheduling the move and waits for it to arrive. Material that stayed surface-level gets re-engaged by running the now-fluent move on it: whenever isolated thinking starts, links get built. Only links that score four or five reach the notes. Where the big picture is missing, a simple overarching structure gets forced. Three minutes is the curiosity cap. The thinking widens while the written record narrows. The encoding of the same material before and after is compared. That comparison is the week’s test.
Success is three things at once: moderate comfort with the effort and uncertainty — not avoiding it, not picking only the easy links — plus new material related to the big picture frequently, plus curiosity explored to clarity when clarity is needed.
What the month leaves
What the month leaves is a radar and a partly-formed habit, not mastery. Most people take longer than four weeks to meet those criteria. The fourth week gets repeated rather than treated as a finish line.
Awareness is what a month buys, and fluency takes longer.
A month of upgrades never equals depth on the first pass, which is what the habit is for. The intervals and caps are house defaults with no trial behind those exact numbers. Some item-specific encoding earns its place: the claim is that relating need not wait, not that isolating is useless. A tally that never falls and effort that never eases across the month means the track is not landing. The next move is the fourth week again, not the next dimension. This is not re-reading harder.
