30-Day Challenge - Retrieval
The Retrieval Challenge is a four-week practice plan for replacing rereading with a closed-book reconstruction, then making the attempt harder and using the misses as the map. Retrieval here means pulling an idea out of memory without looking.
Week 1 — Basic Retrieval Practice
The first week replaces passive review with active retrieval. The attempt itself is the practice. After a first pass through the material, the source closes, and the key ideas are reconstructed from memory. A reread-then-quiz is not this week. The book closes first. A fluent reread leaves the page looking known, and the reconstruction never has to start. The minimum dose is one closed-book reconstruction per study block. That frequency is this system’s default, not a measured law.
The week’s training emphasis is the act of retrieval itself rather than the score. Accuracy is not discarded. It is postponed. Week 4 uses the misses. A reconstruction that comes out thin still counts as the week’s work, because the attempt is what the month is training. A fluent reread with the page still in peripheral vision is not the method. It is the enemy of the week.
Week 2 — Varying Retrieval Conditions
With the book already closing, the second week changes the form of the same attempt. Teaching, problem-solving, and writing from memory replace a single method. Teaching-from-memory can take the shape of a whole-part-whole retell: the whole topic spoken aloud, then each part, then the whole again. Writing from memory is the same reconstruction as week 1, now kept as one form among three rather than the only form. Problem-solving asks the idea to do a job, which a retell can skip. Different conditions expose different gaps. A written reconstruction hides a gap that teaching out loud will surface. A problem will hide a gap that a free retell never asked for. The week’s product is a short note of which form found what. Transfer to an unpractised form is not assumed. That is why the form changes inside the month rather than after it.
The ladder
The move never changes and the demand does. Replace review, vary the form, raise the demand, treat the miss as the map. Week 1 trains the act over the score. Week 4 reverses that into diagnosis. That reversal is what makes the month a ladder rather than four tips. Every week ends on the same closed book. What changes is what happens after the reconstruction — another form, a harder demand, or a restudy of only what failed.
Spaced Interleaved Retrieval is the standing method this month trains: retrieval spread over time and mixed across topics and forms. That page owns the system. This page owns the four-week closed-book do.
Week 3 — Increasing Retrieval Difficulty
The third week raises the demand on the same closed-book attempt with three levers: fewer cues, more time between exposure and retrieval, or several topics mixed in one session. One lever at a time keeps the cause of a drop readable. Fewer cues means the heading stays and the bullet list does not. More delay means the reconstruction happens at the next session rather than at the end of this one. Mixed topics means two related subjects share the same closed-book pass. Performance under the higher demand gets logged. The log is the week’s product: what held, what thinned, which lever produced the thinness. Spacing and mixing are the evidence under the second and third levers. They are not re-derived here.
Week 4 — Using Retrieval as Diagnosis
The last week treats the retrieval session as a diagnostic tool. Gaps and struggles name the weak areas. Those areas then get targeted re-processing. Restudy after a successful recall is mostly waste. Restudy after a failure is the useful half. That split is what makes week 4 a method rather than a mood.

A diagnostic miss becomes the next experiment the way Kolbs Experiential Cycle already names: what failed, how it felt and why, what rule that suggests, what changes next time.
The month is useless before encoding has landed. A closed-book pass that is actually a reread with the page still visible is not the method. Transfer past the practised form is not automatic, which is why week 2 varied the form in the first place.
After a one-week delay, repeated testing has beaten repeated study on a prose passage by a wide margin, and extra study trials after a successful recall have added little while extra retrieval trials have added a lot. Across the literature the testing effect sits at a medium size and grows when the test is more demanding. Those are findings about the world. They are not this week’s timers. There are no private week files behind this track, and none are invented here.
What the month leaves
What the month leaves is a closed-book habit and a miss-as-map, not a mastered spacing system. The book stays closed. The miss now decides the next restudy. A week 1 that still opens with a fluent reread has not started. A week 4 that restudies what was already recalled has missed the useful half. Either is the quit signal: the next move is the week again, not a wider method.
