Bear Hunter System - Shoot
Bear Hunter System - Shoot
The Shoot phase is where you actively encode new information into the networks and structures begun during the Aim phase. It moves you from “this seems related” to actually integrating the material in a meaningful, retrievable way.
Purpose
While Aim builds the initial map of relationships, Shoot is the phase of deep processing. The goal is to create strong, versatile connections rather than isolated facts or simple lists.
How It Works
During Shoot you:
- Actively look for the best places to attach new information to your existing structure
- Use non-linear note-taking to represent the growing network
- Test and refine connections through questioning and comparison
- Prioritise which relationships are most important for current and future retrieval needs
This phase emphasises doing the cognitive work of encoding rather than passively consuming material.
Stage-Specific Pressures and Adjustments
A common failure mode is reverting to linear copying or highlighting instead of actively placing information into the map. The structure should grow and change as you work.
Another frequent issue is creating too many weak connections without prioritisation. Early volume is useful, but deliberate pruning and strengthening of the strongest links is what makes the map effective.
Integration
Shoot works in close partnership with non-linear note-taking — your notes become the visible record of the encoding process. It prepares the ground for effective spaced interleaved retrieval by creating multiple meaningful orders.
