Schooling - The Format Filter
A seated format filters by sex. Gender is the story told afterward: that the boys who failed the format were the fault.
Each stage produces the conditions for the next, which is why the effect is larger than any of its parts and why fixing any single stage would not have prevented the outcome. The end state is not a cohort of underperforming boys. It is two cohorts who have been taught incompatible things about each other.
The seated model
Primary education asks a child to remain still and attend to an adult for hours. This is difficult for most children and specifically difficult for boys, who at that age are oriented toward spatial and mechanical activity and carry higher drives for movement and risk. The requirement is not neutral between them; it is a filter that one group passes more easily.
Boys with strong imaginations escape into inattention and boys without find something to do with their hands. Either route produces the same institutional record: falling behind, and getting into trouble for the mechanism by which they fell behind.
Sex is the kind the filter acts on. Boys and girls are not interchangeable inputs to a seated day, and the page does not treat them as such. Gender is a later operation: a vocabulary and a set of policies that redescribed a sex-format mismatch as a moral fact about men. The two claims are easy to fuse and they are not the same. Equivalence of the sexes is the premise of the blame. Gender is how the blame was spoken.
The explanation that was reached for
Faced with that pattern, the available options were to question the format or to locate the fault in the students. The second is cheaper and it is what happened — discipline, and in a growing number of cases medication.
The defense offered when this is raised points at the girls: their results are better, so the problem must be the individual boys rather than the arrangement. This requires the sexes to be equivalent in the relevant respects, which is the assumption doing all the work and the one never argued for.
It is also testable, and it does not survive. By sixteen to eighteen boys close the gap on standardised measures and move ahead in mathematics and at the upper end of technical subjects, while their grades — assigned by teachers, over years, with discretion — commonly remain lower. The two measures disagree, and they disagree in the direction that shows which one is tracking the format.
What the other half of the room learned
This is the stage that converts an educational problem into a social one.
Girls spent a decade watching boys fail, get disciplined, and fall behind them, and drew the obvious inference: boys are less capable and less responsible. What was actually being observed was compliance with a format, rewarded. The praise attached to it named the wrong virtue — smarter rather than more agreeable — and the misattribution was absorbed by both parties.
A cohort primed this way is ready for anything told to it later about the group it has watched underperform.
The vocabulary
The propaganda that followed was mostly linguistic and mostly aimed at ordinary behaviour. Terms were coined for a man occupying space and for a man explaining something, both of which recast unremarkable conduct as an imposition requiring correction.
The explaining one has a mechanism worth naming. Men commonly bond by demonstrating how things work, which is a friendly act in its native context. Making it taboo removed one of the two sexes’ default routes to connection with the other, and nothing replaced it.
The suspicion
The period that followed treated every male student as a potential offender and made that treatment explicit in policy. Where accusation was to be credited automatically, the practical consequence was that female students became authoritative judges of male students’ characters: a boy assessed as unsettling was unsettling, and the assessment carried no burden of demonstration.
Two effects followed. Even an ordinary approach became dangerous, since a misjudged attempt produced a reputational outcome rather than a rejection. And where accusation carries no cost of being wrong, the small fraction of people who will exploit that discover it.
The observable results were male teachers declining to be alone with female students, and boys withdrawing from the ordinary business of asking someone out. A generation was taught that the risk of initiating exceeded the reward, and it responded rationally.
The gap
The pay claim was taught as established through posters, projects, and assemblies, in its unadjusted form — comparing all men to all women without controlling for field, hours, tenure, or continuity — which is the form that does not survive the controls.
The response was structural. Scholarships restricted by sex, recruitment targets, and preferential recommendation operated on one side of the cohort while the other competed against the results. In the outcomes that matter for early careers, those policies show up as young women in comparable roles hired more often and paid more. The reversed gap is the output of the named rules, not a second mystery requiring a second inference.
What compounded
No stage accounts for the outcome by itself. Together they produced a settlement in which one sex was taught that the other is less capable and holds whatever it has unfairly, and the other was taught that institutions are adversarial and that approach carries asymmetric risk.
That is a description of two populations equipped to misread each other. People who have been trained since childhood to read the opposite sex as either incompetent or dangerous do not form households easily, and a generation that cannot form them carries that split into its politics. The mechanism is available; its share of the outcome is not measured here. A sister page traces a different route to the same household result, and neither isolate is claimed.

Open questions
If standardised measures and assigned grades disagree consistently in one direction, which of them should determine access to the next stage of education?
Where a format disadvantages one group and the alternative would disadvantage another, what decides which disadvantage a system should carry?
