The Woke Mind Virus

Woke ideology teaches a young man that words are violence, that setbacks are oppression, and that his pain is an illness with a name, and it damages the young men it takes hold of. That position was formed by watching it happen, before any of the numbers on this page were gathered, and it is set here against everything that has actually been measured, with every reading that competes with it tested at full strength, and with whatever no one has measured said plainly.

The other pages in this section run on logic, testing whether one claim follows from another. This page runs on statistics, and the numbers are where its arguments are generated from. It is stats heavy on purpose.

The gap

On every American survey that asks, young people on the left report worse mental health than young people on the right, and the women on the left report the worst of all. When people were asked whether a doctor had ever told them they have a mental-health condition, 34 percent of white liberal men aged 18 to 29 said yes against 16 percent of conservative men, and 56 percent of liberal women said yes against 27 percent of conservative women. When people were asked to rate their own mental health on a scale from 0 to 100, young liberal men averaged 46.9 against 59.3 for young conservative men, and the average fell step by step across the whole political range, from 65.1 at the far right down to 45.3 at the far left. The difference does not come only from religion, because among young men who never attend church the gap is still there, at 39.6 against 53.6. Among high-school seniors, 86,138 of them across fourteen years, liberal boys score 2.06 on a five-point depression scale against 1.89 for conservative boys, and by 2021 about 36 percent of liberal young men counted as high in depression against about 21 percent of conservative young men.

An honesty note applies to every number in this section. The figures for liberal boys as a group of their own appear in exactly one peer-reviewed table anywhere, and two of the figures here, the 0-to-100 ratings and the doctor-told-you numbers from the General Social Survey, which has asked Americans about their lives since the 1970s, were computed for the research bank behind this page because nobody had published them, and the bank says so and names the files.

Sick people pick the belief

The first rival reading says that the belief does not make anyone sick, and that sick people lean toward the belief. People who worry lean left, because in young Americans a high score on neuroticism, the trait of worrying and dwelling, goes together with liberal politics at age 29 and not at age 57, and the link is the same size in both sexes. Religion moves together with politics too, because the young men who left church are both more liberal and worse off, and when churchgoing is counted alongside politics the boys’ gap shrinks by half, down to a size that can no longer be told apart from zero. This reading has never been put to a test, because nobody has measured young men’s politics at one time and their mental health at a later time, so it stays open rather than defeated.

They say it more

The second rival reading says that the left and the right feel much the same and describe it differently. The numbers behind this reading push harder against this page’s position than anything else here, and the size of the gap changes with the wording of the question. When a man is asked to accept a diagnosis, the boys’ gap runs two to one; when he fills in a symptom checklist, the gap shrinks to 2.06 against 1.89; and when he is asked to count his bad days in the past month, the gap disappears completely, with liberal young men reporting 4.07 such days and conservative young men 4.13. The same bad-days count shows a wide gap among young women, 8.31 days against 5.56, so the disappearance happens only among the men. There is also an experiment, in which a thousand people were randomly split, half rating their “mental health” and half rating their “overall mood,” and the conservative advantage of 11 points on the first wording disappeared on the second. The most common reply, that conservative men simply will not admit weakness, fails when it is checked, because people were scored on how much shame they attach to mental illness, and allowing for that score moves the gap by almost nothing.

Taken on its own, this reading says that nothing is wrong with anyone and that the two sides just use different words, but it does not have to be taken on its own.

The belief makes them sick

The reading this page holds keeps everything in the last one and adds to it. The bad days come out even while the labels do not, and on this reading the label itself is the ideology at work, because the teaching tells a man that his ordinary pain is an illness, and a man taught to call himself sick starts living like a patient. Therapy, when it works, teaches the opposite, that your thoughts are not facts and that you are not fragile. On this reading, a movement that hands healthy young men a sick identity has harmed them even in the weeks when their bad days count the same, because what a man believes about himself acts on him on its own, over and above whatever his days contain.

Two measured facts support this reading. The young men furthest into the politics are the worst-off group anywhere in the data: boys who call themselves radical score 2.50 on the five-point scale, which is worse than every liberal group of either sex. And read this way, the label gap itself stops being a point against the position, because the extra labels among liberal young men then show the ideology handing out the sick identity as it happens.

Two measured facts stand against this reading, and nothing on this page weakens them. The one study that measured woke attitudes directly, on 5,878 people in Finland, found that the woke scale predicts anxiety and depression no better than simply asking whether someone is left-wing, so nothing measured so far gives the specifically woke route any advantage over plain leftism. And in the earliest years of the high-school series, 1989 to 1994, liberal boys already scored worse than liberal girls and worse than conservative boys and girls, so the ordering is older than the movement this page names. The wording experiment also counts against every version of the claim that the left is sicker, including the version this page holds.

The boys who transitioned

The sharpest form of the harm claim is the boy who is told that his unhappiness means he is a girl. The English national review of youth gender medicine found that the treatment pathway was designed for boys who had not reached puberty and is now mostly given to a different group, since referrals run 73 percent girls, and it found no reliable evidence that the hormones reduce suicide. The strongest study built to show benefit, which followed 315 youths through two years of hormones with no control group, found that depression fell and life satisfaction rose in those born female and not in those born male. In Denmark, across the whole country and four decades, every one of the twelve suicides among transgender people was a person born male, at four and a half times the rate for other men, and nothing in the data says whether treatment raised or lowered that rate. Regret after surgery measures at 0.6 percent in the Dutch clinic that treated nearly the whole country, but a patient counted as regretful only under a definition so narrow that the third of hormone starters who never came back fall outside the count. And the share of those born male who stop treatment is 4 percent in the Netherlands, 10.5 percent in Finland, and 19 percent in the health system that covers American military families, which are three national datasets that do not agree with one another.

What nobody has measured

No study follows young men’s politics into their later mental health. No study has checked whether a depression questionnaire means the same thing to a conservative and to a liberal filling it in. No study measures ideology and transition in the same population, so the route this page’s position needs, from woke belief into transition into damage, is unmeasured rather than supported. And the survey that asked 60,000 Americans a year to rate their own mental health, the one behind the 0-to-100 numbers earlier on this page, dropped that question in 2024, so the best series ends at 2022.

Where it lands

The gap is real, because it shows up in every dataset that separates young men by politics, and it is not the product of one survey or one analyst. What creates the gap is still unknown, and the position here reads the labels themselves as the harm: a movement that teaches its young men to call themselves ill has hurt them even in the weeks when the count of bad days comes out even. What would confirm this position is a study that measures politics first and health later, together with a woke scale that predicts better than plain leftism somewhere outside Finland. What would end this position is the mood-wording result repeating everywhere it is tried, together with the labelled men turning out to live no differently from the unlabelled ones. Underneath the numbers sits the conclusion: worldviews are generated from self-talk, and self-talk is the basis of mental health and one of the primary forces on it. Correlation is not always causation, but with enough points on a graph all going in the same direction, it becomes hard not to see a line.
